NFL Playoff Picks: Picking Each Potential Super Bowl with Final Score
The AFC and NFC Championship games have been set, and that brings along four possible Super Bowls that could take place in Indianapolis this year.
The San Francisco 49ers will be hosting the NFC Championship game at Candlestick Park, hoping to etch their name next to the past great teams lead by Joe Montana and Steve Young. The New York Giants, however, will be coming in confident after taking out Green Bay in Lambeau Field in what should shape up to be a phenomenal championship game.
On the other side, we have the Baltimore Ravens meeting up with the New England Patriots in Foxboro for a 2010 AFC Wildcard rematch. The Patriots were able to take care of the Denver Broncos with ease last weekend, but the Ravens knocked off a game against the Houston Texans and will look to ride that momentum to the Super Bowl.
With intriguing scenarios regardless of which teams become NFC and AFC champions, here are my predictions for each possible Super Bowl.
Baltimore Ravens vs New York Giants
1 of 4In what would be a Super Bowl XXXV rematch, the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens would be an interesting match-up.
The Ravens and Giants haven't played one another (excluding the preseason) since the 2000 Super Bowl, meaning the two modern-day versions of these teams have yet play one another.
This game would surely be a defensive affair, with Baltimore able to shut down the Giants rushing attack and limit Eli Manning's big plays through the air.
It would shock me to see Joe Flacco able to get going early and often against a Giants team that barely allowed the Packers to put up 20 points just last week, so the Ravens would need to succeed in the ground game to produce points on this day.
Final Score: New York 24, Baltimore 16
New England Patriots vs San Francisco 49ers
2 of 4Growing up in San Mateo, California, Tom Brady was a huge San Francisco 49ers fan. Just a few weeks from now, he may have the chance to defeat his childhood team and further cement his legacy as the modern day Joe Montana.
Though these teams faced one another back in 2008, the 49ers are a very different ball club than they were even a season ago. Jim Harbaugh has come in and brought their once very good defense to an elite level, while the offense behind Frank Gore and Alex Smith has been able to put enough points on the board each week to keep winning.
The Patriots have a phenomenal passing attack and were able to get the run game going against Denver's league best run defense last weekend. But the Pats will have to go through both the Harbaugh brothers' defenses to once again hoist the Lombardi trophy.
Brady and company will have better luck slinging the ball around than most teams have against this 49ers defense and honestly even with that atrocious defense it'll be tough for the 49ers to match their points output.
Final Score: New England 27 San Francisco 26
Baltimore Ravens vs San Francisco 49ers
3 of 4If you thought the regular season version of the Harbaugh-Bowl was a defensive showdown, wait until you see it when the lights shine the brightest.
When these two teams met back in Week 12, both teams' offenses had difficulties moving the ball on offense due to the stellar play by both defensive units.
Ray Rice and Frank Gore were both held in check, with a combined 35 carries for 98 yards for the star running backs. Flacco and Smith were no different than their rushers, with just a combined 301 yards between them in what turned out to be a 16-6 Ravens victory.
These two teams match up so well with one another because they have the same core tendencies. Both play great defense and hope to put up enough points on offense to pull out a close victory.
I think this time around though, Jim Harbaugh's 49ers would be the ones emerging victorious. They've been the more consistently successful team this season and will be playing with a chip on their shoulder thanks to their regular season loss to John Harbaugh's Ravens.
Final Score: San Francisco 20 Baltimore 16
New England Patriots vs New York Giants
4 of 4For as many "We're only focusing on beating the Ravens this week" responses we'll hear from the Patriots between now and Sunday, you know they want this Super Bowl XLII rematch.
Four years ago, the Patriots had their undefeated season ruined by the Cinderella New York Giants, who entered the playoffs just 10-6 back in 2007.
The Giants look a lot like that '07 squad, playing stellar defense that just held Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to 20 points last weekend and the Falcons to just two the week before. The G-Men are hot at the right time once again.
The Patriots, to be fair, are looking a lot like their 2007 selves too, shutting down Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos. If they're able to put up points against the Ravens' D, the Giants will have difficulties slowing their momentum in what could turn out to be a shootout between the two teams.
The Giants, I believe, would have the mental edge in this game however, as they've defeated the Patriots the past two times they played one another. In the most recent occurrence, the G-Men ruined the Pats 20-game home winning streak earlier this season.
The Giants know how to defeat these Patriots and will do so again if this 2007 rematch becomes a reality.
Final Score: New York 31 New England 27
