Tom Thibodeau: Why Haven't Chicago Bulls Extended Their Coach's Contract?
For reasons unknown to the world, the Chicago Bulls have not yet picked up the option on head coach Tom Thibodeau's contract, according to the New York Daily News:
""What's taking the Bulls so long to say that they're going to pick up the option on Tom Thibodeau's contract for next season? According to team sources, last year's Coach of the Year is not very happy that the team hasn't discussed his future. Nor should he be."
"
To say that I agree would be along the lines of an understatement such as, "Derrick Rose can jump reasonably well," or "Joakim Noah has hair."
Extend. Tom. Thibodeau.
Thibodeau, after all, literally has the highest winning percentage of any coach in the entire history of the NBA. Now granted, he's only in his second season, so you can't make too much of that, but even so, what else could you possibly want from him?
In just his second year, Thibodeau's team is giving up the second-fewest points per game of any team in the shot-clock era and the third-lowest defensive rating in the three-point era.
He's helped the front office that isn't extending him to win Executive of the Year.
He helped point guard Derrick Rose win the league's Most Valuable Player.
And, yes, he himself won Coach of the Year. He tied the record for wins by a rookie head coach, and his 21-win boost of the Bulls' record was the largest win increase in history for a coach taking over a .500 team. Thibodeau also coached the team to the conference finals last year.
Yes, he has a wrinkle or two that need to be ironed out. He can play some of his players a little too long, and he can be a bit rigid in his rotations (though he's shown more flexibility as of late), but what are you going to do, find someone better?
This is such a no-brainer that Lloyd Christmas could make the call.
There's no need to wait. Delaying only accomplishes one thing: It distracts.
Extend Thibodeau, and extend him now!
