NBA Trade Rumors: Deron Williams, Dwight Howard Would Form Mavericks Dynasty
The possibility of Deron Williams and Dwight Howard joining forces in Dallas with Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks to form the next Big Three and ultimately the next NBA dynasty is not as unlikely as one might believe.
According to ESPN's Rumor Central, Dallas is one of Howard's three preferred trade destinations, while Williams is likely to bolt for a contender at season's end if the Nets fail to sign a piece like Howard, meaning he could be moved by New Jersey in exchange for a few players.
Considering the Mavericks freed up so much cap room this past offseason, they will be the one contender financially capable of staying in play for the two big-name all-stars. Also consider that the Mavericks have a host of talent that they could offer the Nets and Magic in exchange for the two franchise building blocks.
The Mavs could float around young players like Rodrigue Beaubois and Ian Mahinmi, or more proven veterans like Delonte West, Brendan Haywood or Shawn Marion. They would likely offer anything but the core of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Lamar Odom.
Howard and Williams could instantly step in and treat some of Dallas' current issues as well. Howard would fix the Mavs' rebounding problem, and give them a Tyson Chandler-like presence on defense in front of the rim.
Nowitzki would take the scoring burden off Howard, and Superman would take the rebounding and defensive burden off Nowitzki, who is averaging just 5.5 RPG and less than one-third of a block per game. Meanwhile Howard is averaging 15.2 RPG and 2.2 BPG this season with Orlando.
Williams, on the other hand, would improve the Mavs' point guard situation dramatically. Jason Kidd is a steady hand, but Williams is a playmaker and a superstar capable of taking games over. At age 27, the youth he supplies would keep Dallas relevant for years to come.
Even if the Mavs had to ship off Terry or Odom in order to claim Howard and Williams, the result would no doubt be a dynasty. The Big Three of Williams, Howard and Nowitzki would guarantee scoring, playmaking, rebounding and defense.
The Mavs currently rank 23rd in the league in rebounding and 15th in assists per game. Both categories need to be addressed before the trade deadline if Dallas is going to defend its title this spring.
Management has put the Mavs in the best position of any team to improve considerably in those categories in the coming weeks and months however, and that's why they are the favorite to land both Williams and Howard before the start of 2012-13.
Both players want to play there, and given the recent formations of big market powerhouses over the past couple of seasons, it's safe to assume that the Mavericks will be in play and far away in first place for the NBA's next super team and championship-winning dynasty.
