Joe Paterno Reportedly Admitted to the Hospital Amid Health Complications
Former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno has reportedly been admitted to the hospital today due to complications from his lung-cancer treatment.
Tweeted Ryan Beckler of OnwardState.com:
Paterno, who was fired in November amid the scandal surrounding former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, is 85 years old. His son, Scott, said in November that Paterno had a treatable form of lung cancer.
According to the AP, via PennLive.com, Paterno's family said he's been undergoing a "regimen of treatments" since being diagnosed two months ago. They said Paterno has "total confidence" in the doctors and expects to make a full recovery.
This isn't Paterno's first stint in the hospital. He suffered a variety of injuries while he was head coach at Penn State.
In November 2006, he was struck in a collision on the sidelines during a game against Wisconsin, suffering a fractured shin bone and damage to his ligaments.
In November 2008, Paterno underwent hip replacement surgery after spraining his leg while demonstrating onside kicks during a practice session.
And in August 2011, one of Paterno's receivers collided with him on the sidelines during practice. He sustained hairline fractures to his hip and shoulder, but still made it out for the start of the regular season in a wheelchair.
During alumni sessions this week, former students have blasted the university for firing Paterno amid the scandal.
Said former student John Lagana of Penn State board members, via FoxNews.com, "They seem to be hiding under a rock someplace. I'm a big Joe Pa fan, and I think he was treated unjustly."
Paterno was also expected to speak for the first time since his firing with Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post this weekend.
Paterno holds the record for career FBS victories with 409 wins and was head coach for Penn State from 1966 to 2011.
