Giants vs. Packers: How New York Can Upset the 15-1 Packers

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

As the NFL's Divisional Round creeps closer and closer, you're starting to see more analysts talking about how the New York Giants can beat the Green Bay Packers.

Let me be clear in saying there's no "blueprint" to pulling off this upset. However, if the Giants can successfully execute the following two things on both offense and defense, they'll be right in it against the 15-1 Packers at Lambeau Field.

Offense

1. Lull them to sleep

When the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Packers last month, their offensive game plan was simple and concise.

Kyle Orton routinely checked down to avoid making that one game-breaking mistake. The running game and short passes allowed the team to embark on long, time-consuming drives.

The Giants have the horses to break big plays, but Eli Manning has to avoid turning the ball over. Play it safe first and foremost.

2. Attack the edge

The Packers will throw a combination of Ryan Pickett and B.J. Raji—over 700 pounds of human being—on the defensive line in running sets. However, there's no need to run at those two. Attack the Packers on the edge of their defense by putting pressure on whoever is playing opposite of Clay Matthews.

Ahmad Bradshaw could have a big game getting to the outside against a vulnerable run defense.

Defense

1. Trust your corners

This may be the most important aspect of Sunday's game. The Giants simply must have confidence in their cornerbacks to play up at the line of scrimmage.

The Chiefs did well in consistently jamming the Packers receivers at the base of their routes, which threw off the timing of the entire offense and allowed the Chiefs pass rush to get home. The Giants need to copy that success.

2. Continue to unleash

It's common sense, but worth mentioning. The Giants front four has to control this game. Jason Pierre-Paul was a monster in the first meeting, but the Packers still scored 38 points. He needs help from Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Chris Canty. If the entire line can put together a display on par with Sunday's against Atlanta, the Giants will be right in it.
