New York Jets: Why the Jets Players Need to Keep Blasting Mark Sanchez

Peter EmerickJun 7, 2018

After the New York Jets ended the 2011 regular season on a three-game losing streak, the front office decided it was time to let go of a majority of their offensive coaching staff.  While doing that isn't a bad move, the Jets are failing to realize what their real problem is.

The Jets real problem is the fact that Mark Sanchez is their staring quarterback.

The players who talked to the New York Daily News regarding Mark Sanchez's lazy approach to playing quarterback and his contentment with being an absolutely average quarterback were right on the money with what they had to say about Sanchez.  The only problem with what they said was that they did it anonymously, which is always bad way to go about confronting anything in life.

Either way, here's exactly what the anonymous Jets players had to say about their franchise quarterback:

"We have to bring in another quarterback that will make [Sanchez] work at practice.  He's lazy and content because he knows he's not going to be benched."

"How can we when he's not improving at all? (regrind a question about winning a Super Bowl with Sanchez), He thinks he is, but he's not. He has shown us what he's capable of."

Those are the kinds of things that veteran players in the Jets' locker room need to keep telling Sanchez, until he starts to respond.  The problem with Mark Sanchez isn't that he doesn't have the intangibles and the football skill to be a great quarterback in the NFL.  The problem with Mark Sanchez is exactly what that anonymous player said about him, he seems absolutely content with being a subpar quarterback because he knows the Jets aren't going to do anything about it.

When the Jets are winning games, Sanchez is a great quarterback to have on your team.  He's energetic in the huddle, he's well-spoken in postgame interviews, and his laid-back personality seems to fit with head coach Rex Ryan's style of coaching.

When the Jets aren't winning though, Sanchez is an absolute cancer for the Jets.  He lacks the maturity he needs to rally his teammates around him, and because of his lack of leadership, he doesn't have the respect of his teammates, something that every starting quarterback in the NFL absolutely must have.

The dichotomy known as Mark Sanchez doesn't need to be traded, and he doesn't need to be released by the New York Jets.  What Sanchez needs is for veteran players on the Jets roster to call him out for what they think he lacks, but they can't continue to do it anonymously.  If you want to challenge Mark Sanchez, there has to be some level of accountability, and that can't happen if players are going to be allowed to anonymously bash their quarterback.

If Mark Sanchez wants to grow up and actually become a solidified quarterback in the NFL, he needs to be able to hear the constructive criticism his teammates have for him and respond to that criticism with an openness to change.

The way that Sanchez responds to these comments made by players on the Jets roster will display the kind of perspective and mindset Sanchez has going forward.  No matter how Sanchez responds, one thing is for sure, and that's the fact that the Jets players need to continue to call Sanchez out until he begins to mature.

Sanchez can learn something from a quarterback named Tim Tebow, who responded to constant negativity and criticism with humility and an acceptance to work on the things that he knew he had to work on in order to get better.

Mark Sanchez, the ball's in your court.  How you respond to what was anonymously said about you will dictate how the public perceives you and how the players on the Jets roster perceive you as you move forward.
