Lakers Rumors: Lakers Must Discourage Andrew Bynum from Playing in Olympics
Andrew Bynum hasn't missed a game due to injury this season. The Lakers organization and the fanbase have to have their fingers crossed that he stays healthy. This is especially the case if they intend to make him a part of their long-term plans.
When Bynum is healthy, he is the closest thing to Dwight Howard. Problem is, he's rarely healthy. That is why he should be discouraged from participating in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The Lakers can count their blessings if the oft-injured big man makes it through this entire season alone.
The schedule in itself is quite the impediment, even for players with no injury history, let alone a player who's had various knee issues like Bynum.
Bynum has been near dominant so far this season. He is averaging 19 points and 16 rebounds per game. Compare that to Dwight Howard, who is averaging 19 and 15, and many could ask why the Lakers would even bother pursuing the Magic star.
That may be why Jim Buss said that trading Bynum and Gasol for Howard was silly. The league is beginning to see his point, and maybe a season that sees Bynum play 58 games will deaden the Lakers' interest in D12.
If they do keep Bynum and go after another impact player at point guard or small forward, Bynum should be kept away from Olympic consideration.
After all, team USA is better suited to play without Bynum than the Lakers are.
