NBA Rumors: Idea of Dwight Howard for Blake Griffin Trade Makes Sense

Eric BallJan 11, 2012

As seemingly every big man in the NBA gets linked as potential trade bait for Dwight Howard, one that might actually work as emerged.

In one 140-character tweet, Magic insider for the Orlando Sentinel Brian Schmitz may have cracked the code:

Now that’s one blockbuster trade.

If you think about it, this trade is perfect for both sides.

Blake Griffin is a great young player that the LA crowds have quickly fallen in love with, but the guy is more style than substance. His defense is shaky and his offensive attack is limited. If the Clippers want to win a championship in the two-year window they have with Chris Paul, trading Griffin for more defense would be wise.

Considering Howard has won Defensive Player of the Year twice in a row, problem solved.

Howard’s defensive skills are urgently needed. The Clippers rank 23rd in points allowed (96.3) and are dead last in rebounding (35.3). Howard would fix those problems in a jiffy.

The location of sunny LA would also please Howard and I’m sure the Howard-CP3 combo would be together for the long haul.

Speaking of the long haul, if the Magic were to acquire Griffin and maybe a draft pick or two, they instantly rebuild the team on the fly. Griffin is only 22 and is over four years and a ton of NBA mileage younger than D-12.

The fans would keep coming and Griffin could steal the show at the Dunk Contest during All-Star weekend in Orlando. The team would make the playoffs this season and would be a stud point guard away from being a real contender in the Eastern Conference.

I know this is just one writer's suggestion, but it’s a great one. The Magic are destroying their season with the ongoing Howard drama and there aren’t any viable options right now. The Nets have nothing to offer. The Lakers are stubborn on giving up Andrew Bynum and the Mavericks can’t make a run at him until the offseason.

The Clippers are the best in-season option right now and it’s a move that would pay off for both clubs in the short and long term.

It’s a win-win…pull the trigger Otis Smith!
