Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk Fight to Be Monitored by AI Judge; Won't Affect Results
Saturday's rematch between heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will feature an interesting new wrinkle.
Turki Alalshikh announced on Tuesday that the first-ever AI-powered judge will monitor the fight between Usky and Fury. However, it was noted that this "groundbreaking experiment" won't affect the official results of the fight.
The fight will be scored by three ringside judges who will render a decision if it goes the 12-round distance. Boxing has long been known for its questionable judging, so Alalshikh pointed out the significance of the AI-powered judge being "free from bias and human error."
In their first meeting in May, Usyk defeated Fury by split decision to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era. One judge scored the fight 114-113 for Fury and the other two had it 115-112 and 114-113 for Usyk.
The first half of the first meeting between the two heavyweights was largely dominated by Fury, but Usyk mounted a comeback in the second half of the fight to hand Fury his first career loss. A dramatic ninth-round flurry from Usyk that had Fury staggering into the ropes scored him a knockdown and proved to be the most decisive moment of the fight.
After Fury activated his immediate rematch, Usyk was stripped of his IBF title for failing to face mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois. The WBA, WBC and WBO heavyweight titles will be on the line during Saturday's rematch at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Both fighters seem motivated to make a definitive statement this time around, so perhaps none of the four judges will be needed when it's all said and done.
