Cowboys Trolled by NFL Fans for Getting 'Fleeced' in Jonathan Mingo Trade at Deadline
Some Dallas Cowboys fans are balking at the cost of acquiring wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers at the 2024 trade deadline.
The Cowboys sent a 2025 fourth-rounder to the Panthers on Tuesday in exchange for Mingo and a 2025 seventh-rounder, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Mingo has made 12 catches for 121 yards in nine games for the Panthers so far this season.
The Kansas City Chiefs recently made a trade with the Tennessee Titans that involved sending a fifth-round pick, which could become a fourth-rounder, for former Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins.
The trade also comes after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on Tuesday that quarterback Dak Prescott is likely headed to the injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Mingo, selected by the Panthers in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Mississippi, has yet to record a touchdown pass in the NFL. He has made 55 catches for 539 yards in 24 appearances and 19 starts for the Panthers.
Jones previously believed Mingo was a top-50 pick heading into the 2023 draft, per The Athletic's Dan Brugler. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport wrote that the Cowboys "believe he has a high ceiling and that he will benefit from a fresh start."
The deal received unfavorable reviews in comparison to the Cowboys' 2022 trade of wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Cooper was dealt to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2022 fifth-rounder and a sixth-round pick swap in order for Dallas to clear his salary from their books.
Cooper was moved again earlier this season, this time from the Browns to the Buffalo Bills. He was sent alongside a 2025 sixth-rounder in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and 2026 seventh-round pick.
The New York Jets meanwhile acquired Davante Adams for a 2025 conditional third-rounder earlier this season, while the Baltimore Ravens sent a 2025 fifth-round pick to acquire Diontae Johnson and a sixth-rounder.
That puts the Mingo deal on a similar level to other major wideout transactions that have taken place this fall.
The Cowboys are now left without a pick in the upcoming fourth round, an especially significant loss for a franchise that drafted Prescott in the fourth round of the 2016 draft.
The Cowboys fell to 3-5 on the season with Sunday's Week 9 road loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
With Prescott on the injured reserve and star wideout CeeDee Lamb questionable after suffering a shoulder injury last Sunday, Mingo could step in as a target for backup signal caller Cooper Rush against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
