Giants Rumors: C.J. Beathard Works Out for NY; QB Not Expected to Sign Contract

Timothy RappSep 30, 2024

The New York Giants worked out veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard on Monday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported that his understanding was Monday's meeting between the two parties was "just a standard workout for an emergency short list. Don't think there's anything going on with the Giants' quarterbacks that prompted this and no signing of Beathard is expected."

Because the Giants have both Daniel Jones and Drew Lock on the roster, Monday's report may have initially raised some eyebrows in the Big Apple. It sounds as though the workout wasn't at all about shuffling the quarterback depth chart, however.

Beathard, 30, has played for the San Francisco 49ers (2017-20) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2021-23) in his career, registering 3,886 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions across 32 games (13 starts), completing 60.4 percent of his passes while taking 53 sacks.

The Jaguars released him in late August with an injury settlement, as the veteran quarterback had been dealing with a groin issue, and instead kept Mac Jones to serve as the backup quarterback for Trevor Lawrence.

"It was a significant injury and it's going to keep him away from ball for a while, at least four weeks of the season," general manager Trent Baalke told reporters at the time. "Could be longer, could be shorter. Depends on how quickly he heals and how the rehab goes, but that's the timeline right now."

Because he was released with an injury settlement, the Jaguars couldn't re-sign Beathard for the length of the injury plus an additional three weeks. Other teams could add him in the meantime, however.

It sounds as though the Giants won't be doing so, however.
