All eyes were on Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the first major test of the Kalen DeBoer era.
Through the first half, the Crimson Tide head coach was already making fans forget about Nick Saban. The home team rolled out to a 28-0 lead and led by 23 points when halftime arrived.
Then Georgia stormed back in the second half and even took the lead on Dillon Bell's 67-yard touchdown catch with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter. DeBoer was on the verge of going from the toast of Tuscaloosa to probably having some fans call for his job four games in.
Fortunately for Alabama, freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams capped off an incredible performance by hauling in a deep pass by Jalen Milroe and then spinning to elude two Georgia defenders en route to a 75-yard touchdown.
The Bulldogs marched down to the Tide 20-yard line before quarterback Carson Beck threw an interception to doom the road team to defeat.
In the end, the game mostly affirmed what we already knew. At least for one half each, Alabama and Georgia looked like Top Five teams, and a rematch might await in the SEC title game or the College Football Playoff.
For Ole Miss, on the other hand, Saturday might have presented a reality check.
The Rebels went 4-0 in their nonconference games and won by an average of 49.5 points. Then they came up against an SEC foe and their high-powered offense looked a little more pedestrian.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart went 18-of-27 for 261 yards and a touchdown, and he was sacked four times. Running back Henry Parrish Jr. went for 62 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Even if Caden Davis makes his 48-yard field goal in the final minute regulation and Ole Miss goes on to win in overtime, the team's performance was a concerning sign since LSU, Oklahoma and Georgia all loom on the schedule.
Ole Miss wasn't the only unbeaten team that ran aground in Week 5.
Illinois lost 21-7 to Penn State. Utah finally couldn't overcome the impact of quarterback Cam Rising's absence as it lost 23-10 to Arizona. And Louisville's late comeback bid came up short in a 31-24 loss to Notre Dame.
The Fighting Illini probably came out looking the worst as they mustered just 219 yards against the Nittany Lions. Their upset bid looked cooked toward the end of the first half, when they turned a 1st-and-goal from the Penn State 2-yard line into a missed field goal from 45 yards out.
Looking ahead to Week 6, the schedule doesn't feature a matchup as colossal as Alabama vs. Georgia.
The most notable clash will unfold in College Station, Texas, where Texas A&M welcomes 4-0 Missouri. Iowa going on the road to Ohio State could be intriguing as well since the Hawkeyes have played the Buckeyes close in the past.
Any rematch of the previous year's national championship game is worth following as well. With Michigan vs. Washington, there's the added subplot of how badly the Wolverines offense continues to perform after Alex Orji replaced Davis Warren at quarterback. Head coach Sherrone Moore is under enough pressure as is. A loss to the Huskies would lead to additional questions over whether he was the right candidate to succeed Jim Harbaugh.
