MLB Rumors: Yankees in 'Extensive Trade Talks' for Tigers' Jack Flaherty at Deadline
The New York Yankees reportedly are close to making some changes to their starting rotation.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees "are in extensive trade talks" for Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty. Nightengale added that if New York is successful in landing Flaherty, the team plans to trade starter Nestor Cortes.
Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported earlier on Monday that Flaherty was scratched from his scheduled start against the Cleveland Guardians. Heyman noted that a trade from the Tigers "should be expected soon."

Flaherty has been one of Detroit's most consistent pitchers this season, posting a 7-5 record in 18 starts with a 2.95 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and 133 strikeouts in 106.2 innings of work. Unfortunately, the Tigers have struggled to keep pace in the race for the postseason, as they sit 5.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League with a 52-55 record.
The Yankees already made a strong addition to their lineup ahead of the July 30 trade deadline by acquiring outfielder Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins on Saturday. However, New York is still exploring ways to improve its pitching staff, both in the starting rotation and in the bullpen.
Heyman reported on Sunday that the Yankees were eyeing relievers like Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott, Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and "10-plus more back-end worthy guys."
New York is seeking its first trip to the World Series since its last title in 2009, so the franchise is motivated to load up on talent ahead of this year's playoff run. Adding Flaherty and a quality reliever would go a long way toward boosting the Yankees' chances of winning a 28th title.
