Erick Fedde to Cardinals, Tommy Edman, Kopech to Dodgers in 3-Team Trade with CWS
The St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a three-team trade on Monday that includes starting pitcher Erick Fedde, middle infielder Tommy Edman and outfielder Tommy Pham.
Under the terms of the deal, Fedde is going from Chicago to St. Louis, and Edman will move west from St. Louis to Los Angeles. Pham returns to the Cardinals, where he spent his first four-plus seasons in MLB.

Ex-Player's Reaction to Firing 🤢
- Cardinals acquire: RHP Erick Fedde, OF Tommy Pham
- Dodgers acquire: INF/OF Tommy Edman, RHP Michael Kopech, RHP Oliver Gonzalez
- White Sox acquire: INFs Miguel Vargas, Jeral Perez and Alexander Albertus
Fedde is in the midst of a career year. Through 21 appearances, he's 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA and a 3.76 FIP. According to Baseball Savant, he's allowing a .406 expected slugging and a 36.0 percent hard-hit rate, so he has remained effective despite not missing a lot of bats (8.0 strikeouts per nine innings).
Beyond helping the Cardinals for the stretch run, the 31-year-old makes $7.5 million in 2025, which looks like a modest salary based on his performance this season.
Pham is a much more straightforward rental, having originally signed a minor-league deal with Chicago. He's only slugging .330, but his .330 on-base percentage is close to his career average (.349). His experience playing in all three outfield positions will be a nice luxury for manager Oliver Marmol.
In both Kopech and Edman, the Dodgers will hope they can unearth some surplus value.
Kopech possesses electric stuff. He's averaging 98.6 mph with his four-seam fastball and punching out 30.9 percent of his batters, per Baseball Savant. However, he continues to have control issues — 4.9 walks per nine innings — and he has allowed 23 earned runs in 43.2 innings.
Edman is a versatile defender who won the 2021 Gold Glove as a second baseman. He has yet to make his season debut, though, after undergoing offseason wrist surgery.
Once the 29-year-old is fully healthy, it's hard to picture a better Swiss Army knife for Los Angeles.
Edman will be a clear upgrade over Vargas, who has struggled to find a regular place in the lineup or a clear spot in the field.
The 24-year-old has a .239/.313/.423 slash line with three home runs in 71 plate appearances in 2024. Last season, MLB.com ranked him as the 37th-best prospect in baseball, and a change of scenery was required for him to fulfill that potential.
Vargas could flourish on a rebuilding team that should afford him everyday at-bats.
