Report: Klay Thompson Thinks He's 'Ideal Fit' with Mavs' Luka Dončić, Kyrie Irving
Klay Thompson will enter a new stage of his career this season as he teams up with Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving on the Dallas Mavericks.
The new era means leaving behind his long-time running mate Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, but Thompson believes he's "an ideal fit" for the reigning Western Conference champions, per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews.
According to Shelburne and Andrews, the Mavericks were Thompson's first choice and he even came into a dinner meeting with Dallas' front office having already studied tape and outlined how he can help improve the team.
Thompson joins the Mavs after a sign-and-trade with the Warriors and has agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract. He reportedly received a bigger offer to join LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers but ultimately saw Dallas as the best place to pursue a fifth championship.
The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals for the first time since their 2011 title last season, but it became evident throughout the series against the Boston Celtics that they needed an additional piece.
One of Dallas' biggest weaknesses in the 3-1 series lost to the Celtics was its three-point shooting. The Mavericks shot 31.6 percent from deep and struggled to find any contributors from beyond the arc besides Dončić and Irving.
Of all the free agents this offseason, Dallas would have been hard-pressed to find a more reliable three-point shooter than Thompson. Even in a somewhat down year from the five-time All-Star, Thompson shot 38.7 percent from deep last season.
Now, he'll look to be the missing piece that helps Dončić earn his first ring.
