Lakers Rumors: Dwane Casey Won't Join JJ Redick's Staff amid Alvin Gentry Buzz
Former Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey will not join JJ Redick's staff with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Dave McMenamin of ESPN reported Casey withdrew his name from consideration because he did not want to "uproot his family."
Casey, 67, did not coach in the NBA last season after moving into the Detroit Pistons' front office. The Lakers are looking for an experienced coach to join Redick's staff to help the former NBA guard make his transition to the bench.
Alvin Gentry is also on the Lakers' list of potential lead assistants. The Lakers are yet to make any hires for Redick's staff despite rumors he began assembling a list of targets in May.
It's possible Casey has decided to retire from the grind of coaching altogether in his advanced age. He compiled a 494-570 record in 14 seasons as an NBA coach with the Pistons, Raptors and Minnesota Timberwolves. The last time Casey served as an assistant was the 2010-11 season with the Dallas Mavericks, winning an NBA championship as part of the staff that helped lead the Mavs to their upset win over the LeBron James-led Miami Heat.
As a head coach, Casey made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016 with the Raptors but missed the postseason eight times in 14 years overall.
Gentry might be a more natural fit on Redick's staff anyway. The 69-year-old coached Anthony Davis for four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans and has 18 years total of head-coaching experience.
Developing a strong relationship with Davis will be paramount to Redick's success moving forward. Redick already has an established friendship with LeBron James—you may have heard a time or twelve that the two hosted a podcast together—so having Gentry available as an entry point could help create headroads with Davis.
