NBA Trade Rumors: Warriors Making Huge Mistake By Pursuing Dwight Howard
What the Golden State Warriors are attempting to do is beyond idiotic.
A team that has teetered on irrelevancy for a decade, are now trying to be the drunk girl at the bar by doing something outlandish for people to recognize them.
In the drunk girl’s case, it’s dancing wildly or making out with another girl. In the Warriors' case, it’s attempting to "rent" Dwight Howard.
It’s no secret that the league’s best center wants to be traded, and his three-team wish list includes the New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks and L.A. Lakers. On Thursday, Yahoo! Sports NBA guru Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Warriors are desperately trying to land the one they call "Superman."
According to Wojo, Warriors management believes they can sell Howard on a bevy of things that would appeal to the 26-year-old:
"The Warriors think they can sell Howard on the endorsement possibilities of a global NBA star in Silicon Valley. From tech companies to social media, Golden State thinks Howard would find an untapped market, as well as a nod from Adidas, who is preparing a new deal for him. And the bottom line is this: Should Golden State make a deal for Howard, he would have to take $30 million less over the length of a contract extension to leave this summer.
"
Aside from the money discrepancy, none of those "perks" are better than playing for the Lakers aka the glamour team of the NBA. Howard wants to get into acting, not computers. The Mavericks are the world champs with owner Mark Cuban, and the Nets have the coolness factor that comes with Jay-Z.
It’s not going to happen, especially when you consider how little talent the Warriors would be left with after the deal. To land Howard, the Warriors would have to trade budding star Stephen Curry or scoring machine Monta Ellis. They would also surrender at least one first-round pick and whatever other spare parts that fit Magic GM Otis Smith’s fancy.
It’s an insane rumor that will never come to fruition. All three teams on Howard’s wish list have more pieces to offer, and Howard will actually not pout about going there.
It stinks that Howard has so much say in all of this, but that’s the reality of the NBA in 2012. You’re not going to land a superstar because your franchise is located by the mecca for computers.
