NBA Rumors: Klay Thompson, Warriors Have Had 'No Notable Movement' on Contract Talks

Paul KasabianMay 30, 2024

Impending free agent shooting guard Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors have not made any "notable movement" toward a new deal, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

"The calendar flips to June this weekend. It's the final month of Klay Thompson's current contract with the Golden State Warriors, and there remains a realistic chance these are the fading days of his 13-year run with the organization. As the decision on his future nears, there's been no notable movement from either side toward a resolution, league sources said."

Thompson, a 13-year veteran, has won four NBA championships with Golden State. The five-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA player has averaged 19.6 PPG over his career.

Golden State just went 46-36 and lost in the first game of the play-in tournament to miss the playoffs. The Warriors still have talent to compete for a playoff berth in Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga and others, but the fact of the matter is that Golden State seems far off from competing for an NBA title right now.

Thompson was an integral part of the Warriors' dynasty, and he is a franchise legend who's destined for the Basketball Hall of Fame someday. But his time with the Warriors could potentially be coming to an end.

Last year featured some struggles for Thompson, who notably came off the bench for 14 games, marking the first time he did that since his rookie year. His 38.7 percent three-point percentage marked just the second time he made under 40 percent of his threes in a season. His 17.9 PPG was also his lowest mark since 2012-13.

Thompson can still play and contribute, of course. He did fare well over his last 19 regular-season games (21.0 PPG, 46.2 percent from the field, 41.1 percent from three). But given the latest report, it's becoming more apparent that Thompson's time in the Bay Area could be coming to an end. That's also the case especially given reported interest from other teams, including the Orlando Magic.

Teams can start negotiating with free agents on June 30 at 6 p.m. ET, so that's the date to watch to see if Thompson and other stars make their moves out of town.
