Games to Watch
Week 1: Ravens at Chiefs, SNF
Sunday Night Football — well technically it'll be on Thursday night — is starting strong out of the gates. An AFC championship rematch will get the season underway as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens.
Time of possession was a major factor in the Chiefs' 17-10 victory over the Ravens last year. They had the ball for 37:30, which meant they were keeping it out of Lamar Jackson's hands and leaving it in those of Patrick Mahomes.
You can't help but look at one of Baltimore's biggest additions as a direct result from that. With Derrick Henry lining up in the backfield, the Ravens should do better than 81 rushing yards and have more success in moving the chains at a deliberate pace against Kansas City if they so choose.
Week 2: Bills at Dolphins, TNF
Despite Stefon Diggs, Jordan Poyer and Mitch Morse all exiting, the Buffalo Bills should have the pieces to make it five AFC East titles in a row. For the Miami Dolphins, on the other hand, there hasn't been a clearer path to the division crown. Anything short of overtaking Buffalo is likely to be classified as a disappointment.
The Bills provided the Dolphins with a reality check in Week 4 last season, earning a 28-point win over Miami one week after Mike McDaniel's squad dropped 70 on the Denver Broncos.
Should the Dolphins come up short again — even this early into the campaign — fans are bound to wonder how much has changed.
Week 8: Cowboys at 49ers, SNF
The San Francisco 49ers made a statement when they traveled into AT&T Stadium and hammered the Dallas Cowboys to the tune of a 42-10 victory last October.
Brock Purdy finished 17-of-24 for 252 yards and four touchdowns, a performance that foreshadowed how the Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love would efficiently shred the Dallas secondary in the NFC Wild Card Round.
No meeting at the halfway point can really be considered a must-win situation, but the Cowboys will really need this one if they want to avoid a lot of grief. Imagine what kind of heat head coach Mike McCarthy will face if Dallas' losing streak against San Francisco extends to four games.
Week 17: Lions at 49ers, MNF
Beyond pitting the NFC title game finalists against one another, this is a matchup that could have postseason implications.
The 49ers and Detroit Lions sit second and third respectively in Bleacher Report's NFL power rankings. They finished with the same record in 2023 and Detroit is probably still kicking itself for failing to protect its 17-point halftime lead in the conference championship.
Both teams could find themselves vying for the top seed in the NFC before crossing paths in the playoffs. Assuming the Niners remain in the conference's elite tier, this will also provide the Lions with an opportunity to prove they've grown after coming up just short.
