Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on Drew McIntyre, Kenny Omega, and More
Drew McIntyre's contract saga is finally over after he re-signed with WWE on a big-money deal that reflects the quality of his work and undeniable contributions to wrestling's most prominent promotion.
The latest on the deal headlines this collection of wrestling rumors, which also looks at the return of Wes Lee, an update on Kenny Omega's health, and injury news on one of the best young stars in AEW.
Latest on Drew McIntyre Re-Signing with WWE
1 of 4Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that Drew McIntyre's new WWE contract is for three years and an unconfirmed $4 million yearly.
The Rock revealed the new deal on social media, emphasizing the significance of the signing of the two-time WWE champion.
McIntyre told The Pat McAfee Show that he was never leaving WWE and the delay in signing had to do with his family and doing right by them.
It is not a surprise that the Scot re-signed with the company and never planned on leaving. He has been prominently featured on the roster for the last six months, had one of the most anticipated WrestleMania 40 matches, and he is embroiled in the hottest feud in WWE with CM Punk.
McIntyre leaving would have been a massive blunder by WWE and probably the performer himself. Sure, he would have gotten paid handsomely to go elsewhere, but how consistently could he expect to be utilized and would it be at the level he is currently at in WWE?
Probably not, if others in similar situations are any indication.
Finally, McIntyre cited his trust in Triple H as a big reason he decided to re-sign and believes the WWE chief content officer is the right person to guide not just WWE but also the next stage of the Scot's career.
Wes Lee's NXT Return
2 of 4Fightful Select's Corey Brennan reported that Wes Lee, who returned Tuesday night as part of NXT's Spring Breakin', has been cleared to wrestle for some time now.
This news comes despite initial reports stating he would be out of action for up to a year due to the severity of his back injury.
Lee is the former NXT North American champion but had to relinquish the title when he stepped away to deal with the injury. So, it made sense when his return saw him interrupt current titleholder Oba Femi celebrating a victory over Ivar.
Lee is one of the most popular stars on the roster and appeared to be on his way to a potential run as world champion before the injury forced him to the sideline.
Now, he has re-emerged in an NXT that looks different than the one he left but with the same fire to succeed.
The question is whether he can utilize his speed and agility to take down the mighty Femi.
Kenny Omega Update
3 of 4Kenny Omega returned to AEW TV Wednesday, only to find himself attacked by The Young Bucks and Kazuchika Okada before being taken out of the arena on a stretcher.
Though fans were excited about the former world champion's return, they should temper that emotion as it does not look like he will be back anytime soon.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported: "For those asking, the latest that we've heard is that Omega is not expected to return to in ring action imminently, as it looks like he's still got a ways to go on recovery on the diverticulitis that sidelined him a while back."
Omega did tease a potential showdown with Okada, with a tense face-to-face. We have yet to see that match stateside, with their first four encounters taking place in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, each one better than the last and breaking Meltzer's star rating system.
Whether it would be fair to expect the same out of them at this point in their careers is an argument for another time, but it will be a moot point if Omega does not take care of the diverticulitis that has plagued him for the last year.
According to Sapp's report, it would appear that is the game plan.
Powerhouse Hobbs Injured
4 of 4Powerhouse Hobbs suffered a significant injury during his IWGP heavyweight title match against Jon Moxley and will be sidelined for an undisclosed period of time, per Sapp.
It is a major blow for Hobbs, who has struggled to catch on with fans thanks to poor booking and usage across AEW television. When he finally gets a high-profile match against a star the magnitude of Moxley, he is injured and put on the shelf for what appears to be some time.
The 33-year-old is an athletic big man with unrivaled power, who can also match speed and agility when need be. He has all the tools necessary to be one of the faces of AEW's bright future but has seen his potential wasted early by a booker who has yet to exhibit an understanding of how to properly utilize him.
Hopefully, some time away allows for a reset and Tony Khan can work toward delivering the sort of push reflective of Hobb's ability.
