NFL Coach, Scout: Spencer Rattler '1 of the Best Pure Throwers' and 'Tough as S--t'
If you're a team that is looking for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft but isn't in range to land one of the top players in the first round, Spencer Rattler might be an alternative option as a developmental signal-caller.
Speaking to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, one offensive coach for an AFC team called Rattler "one of the best pure throwers" in this year's class.
A scout for an AFC club told Fowler that Rattler is "tough as s--t" because South Carolina had "horrible" play from its offensive line last season.

Ranking Every NFL Defense After 2026 Draft 📊
After the big six quarterbacks in this draft—Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr.—there's an argument that Rattler is at the top of the next group.
Each of those top six players could potentially come off the board in the first round. There's been talk throughout the pre-draft process that Williams, Maye, Daniels and McCarthy could be the first four picks for the first time ever.
Nix and Penix are a little more difficult to pin down, but their first-round stock definitely goes up if the first four options are off the board by the time the fifth pick is on the clock.
Rattler's football pedigree is something that could help him out. He was a 5-star prospect and No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class when he committed to Oklahoma.
After one season as the Sooners' starter in 2020, Rattler was benched early in the 2021 campaign for Caleb Williams. He transferred to South Carolina in December 2021.
Things didn't really come together for Rattler with the Gamecocks. He threw for 6,212 yards, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with a 67.5 completion percentage in 25 games over the past two seasons.
B/R's NFL scouting department has Rattler ranked as the seventh-best quarterback in the 2024 draft. He was taken by the Denver Broncos in the third round (No. 76 overall) of B/R's most recent mock draft.
Rattler's arm talent will make him a tantalizing prospect for teams, potentially as early as the second round. B/R's Derrik Klassen deemed him to be a shorter version of Jay Cutler.
Even though Cutler had his limitations, there's a reason he was able to stick it out as a starter in the NFL for 12 years.
