Adam Sandler: 'Shooter McGavin' Actor Wasn't Supposed to Leak 'Happy Gilmore 2' News
Adam Sandler says Happy Gilmore 2 wasn't supposed to be leaked by Christopher McDonald last month.
During an appearance Wednesday on the Dan Patrick Show, Sandler said he told McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original 1996 film Happy Gilmore, to keep the sequel under wraps.
Sandler said:
"He texted me after the fact, 'By the way, that thing you told me not to talk about, I talked about.' I said, 'Oh, that's good news.' All I did was tell him, see I did standup, I did a comedy special and a lot of my buddies came by and Shooter was one of them and I said, 'Dude, we've been talking about a Happy 2 and we're working on some stuff.' That's all I told Shooter. I said, 'But don't tell anybody. Don't tell anybody.' And then he, you know he kept it mostly private. He told a couple of DJs about it. They usually are great at secrets, don't you think?"
When Patrick responded, "You should've known not to trust him," Sandler said he was just "excited that Shooter was in the room with me. I love him."
During an appearance on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan last month, McDonald said Sandler showed him the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. His comments were the first time fans of the original film caught wind that a sequel was in the works.
Sandler also told Patrick that he intends to honor the likes of Bob Barker, Carl Weathers, Joe Flaherty and the original cast in the sequel.
While there's no timetable for when the sequel will come out, Sandler said "Netflix is excited about it" and that he and Tim Herlihy are "working diligently on it."
