Knicks' Jalen Brunson: Victor Wembanyama Will Become 1 of NBA's Greatest Ever Players
New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson paid San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama a serious compliment following his team's 130-126 overtime loss on Friday evening.
"He's going to be one of the greatest players this game has seen," Brunson told reporters, per Mike Monroe of The Athletic. "It's tough to get a shot up and in over him."
Brunson scored 61 points, but it wasn't enough against the Spurs and Wembanyama, who posted 40 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists. Wembanyama also made a few clutch buckets, including a three-pointer to give the Spurs a 128-124 overtime edge.
The 20-year-old entered the NBA with a tremendous amount of hype, and he's somehow exceeded it with an incredible rookie season. Thus far, Wembanyama has averaged 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.4 blocks per game.
He's authored some phenomenal single-game performances, such as his triple-double with 10 blocks against the Toronto Raptors and a 33-point, 15-rebound, seven-assist, seven-block outing versus the Brooklyn Nets.
Wembanyama's night against the Knicks is arguably his best game thus far considering the opponent. New York entered the evening third in the Eastern Conference as winners of seven of its last eight games, so it was a considerable favorite against the Spurs, who sit last in the West. But Wembanyama willed the Spurs to victory despite Brunson's career-best scoring outing.
San Antonio won't be making the playoffs this year, but eight more games remain in Wembanyama's tremendous rookie campaign. He'll continue it Sunday at home versus the Golden State Warriors.
