Patriots' Kraft on Ranking 29th in NFLPA Survey: 'Was Unaware of How Bad' Things Were

Joseph ZuckerMar 26, 2024

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft admitted the NFL Players Association report cards provided him with a rude awakening.

The Patriots ranked 29th overall with the worst grades coming in the treatment of team facilities (F-minus), weight room (F) and ownership (D-plus).

"I must tell you, I was unaware of how bad that was," Kraft told reporters at the NFL annual meeting. "We've had a plan, and we put in place, where we're committing a whole new facility adjacent to ours that has been discussed with the young leadership team — a building that will be in excess of $50 million that will have the most [modern] facilities."

The organization's on-field decline has been impossible to ignore. New England has missed the playoffs in three of the four years after Tom Brady left and things got bad enough in 2023 to justify moving on from legendary head coach Bill Belichick.

The NFLPA survey gave a peek into how things have deteriorated with the Patriots' infrastructure as well.

According to the survey, the franchise doesn't provide daycare support on game days or afford players a dedicated family room/daycare setup.

The assessment of the weight room was withering: "The Patriots are the only team in the NFL with a majority of players feeling that their team's facility is worse than places they could train offsite." Similar concerns were expressed about the training room, which received a C grade.

On the daycare situation specifically, Kraft said he "was not aware" and believes it's "fixable."

His comments leave the impression Patriots players only recently raised criticism of team's facilities, but the franchise ranked 24th in the 2023 NFLPA survey. Treatment of facilities, the weight room and training room all received grades of C-minus or worse. The absence of daycare of a family room were cited.
