Warriors' Draymond Green: T-Wolves' Anthony Edwards 'Believes' He's Next Face of NBA

Adam WellsMar 21, 2024

Anthony Edwards has arguably the two most spectacular highlights of the 2023-24 NBA season, so it's easy to envision a scenario in which he becomes the face of the league when LeBron James eventually retires.

Draymond Green, appearing on SportsCenter after the Golden State Warriors' victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, said unprompted that Edwards "believes" he's the next face of the NBA (starts at 2:15 mark).

Victor Wembanyama seems like the most obvious candidate to take the mantle from James. He entered the NBA with as much hype as any prospect since LeBron in 2003 and is living up to that billing on his own.

The next step for Wembanyama to get into that territory is dependent on how quickly the San Antonio Spurs can become relevant in the playoff and championship picture.

There's a lot more than goes into being the guy that the NBA relies on for all of its marquee games on national television, but Edwards has made the Minnesota Timberwolves a must-watch team.

Edwards had maybe the best game-saving defensive play of the season with his block on Aaron Nesmith to preserve Minnesota's 113-111 win over the Indiana Pacers on March 7.

This week against the Utah Jazz, Edwards had possibly the best dunk of the season when he put John Collins on a poster.

It certainly helps Edwards' profile that Minnesota is having a fantastic season. The club is in a three-team race with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

The Timberwolves currently rank third in that race with a 47-22 record but are just one game behind Oklahoma City for the No. 1 seed.

Edwards has elevated his game since Karl-Anthony Towns has been out of the lineup with a knee injury. He's averaging 31.1 points on 48.1 percent shooting, 7.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.4 blocks per game in his last seven starts.

Time will eventually tell if Edwards' profile is big enough to make him the star everyone in the NBA is judged against, but he's got the game and confidence to at least be in the discussion.
