Cavs' Donovan Mitchell Out at Least 1 Week After Procedure on Nose Injury
The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Tuesday that All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell will miss at least one week due to a nose injury.
The team noted that Mitchell underwent a procedure Tuesday to realign a nasal fracture suffered against the Houston Rockets on Saturday. The Cavs added that Mitchell will be re-evaluated in approximately one week.
Mitchell did not play in the Cavaliers' 108-103 road win over the Indiana Pacers on Monday because of the injury.
The 27-year-old. Mitchell had just recently returned to action after missing seven games with a bone bruise in his knee, but he is on the shelf once again following just two games back in the lineup.
When healthy, the five-time All-Star has often been a dominant force this season, averaging 27.4 points, 3.4 three-pointers made and a career-high 6.1 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest.
Mitchell's play is a big reason why the Cavs are currently the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 43-25 record, putting them one game behind the second-place Milwaukee Bucks and 11 games behind the first-place Boston Celtics.
Durability has been a bit of an issue for Mitchell throughout the season, as he has played in just 49 of the Cavs' 68 games. As a result, he is not eligible for postseason awards such as MVP or the All-NBA teams.
Mitchell has clearly been an All-NBA-caliber player when on the court, though, and the Cavaliers figure to sorely miss his presence while he is out.
To the Cavs' credit, they have remained competitive and played winning basketball this season without Mitchell due to their impressive depth.
Guard Darius Garland figures to be Cleveland's go-to player until Mitchell is able to return, plus Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, Isaac Okoro and Marcus Morris could have elevated roles as well.
The Cavs' depth is truly about to be put to the test because in addition to Mitchell, center Evan Mobley is on the shelf, and both guard Max Strus and forward Dean Wade missed Monday's game.
Based on the timeline provided by the Cavaliers, Mitchell figures to miss Wednesday's game against the Miami Heat, Friday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sunday's game against the Heat and next Monday's game against the Charlotte Hornets.
If things go well with Mitchell's evaluation, he could possibly be back in the lineup next Wednesday against Charlotte, but the Cavs figure to take a cautious approach in the name of ensuring Mitchell is healthy come playoff time.
