NFL Rumors: Zach Ertz, Commanders Agree to 1-Year Contract Worth Up to $5M
Zach Ertz was a mainstay for the Philadelphia Eagles for the majority of his career, but now he'll be suiting up for a different NFC East team in 2024.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Ertz and the Washington Commanders agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth up to $5 million on Wednesday.
There was a time when Ertz, 33, was one of the best tight ends in the league.
Philadelphia selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, and he was a three-time Pro Bowler, tallying five seasons with at least 800 receiving yards in his first seven years in the league. Included in that stretch was the 2018 campaign when he posted 116 catches for 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Eagles traded him to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2021 season, and he hasn't been the same since.
He appeared in seven games last year for Arizona and posted 27 catches for 187 yards and one touchdown before the team released him in November. Ertz signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad ahead of the NFC Championship Game but did not appear in the contest.
While Ertz likely won't be the same player he was at his peak, the Commanders could use productive depth at the tight end position.
Logan Thomas led the position room with 496 receiving yards last season, but Washington released him this offseason in a cap-saving move.
That made it a position of need for the rest of the offseason, and Ertz is a relatively inexpensive addition who is familiar with the division and could provide veteran leadership for a team looking to make a jump in 2024.
