NFL Rumors: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions 'Close' on New Contract Worth $26-28M per Season

Tyler ConwayMar 5, 2024

The Detroit Lions and Amon-Ra St. Brown are reportedly nearing a contract extension that will pay the Pro Bowl wideout between $26-28 million per season.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported the deal will put St. Brown in the conversation among the NFL's highest-paid receivers. Tyreek Hill is the only wideout topping $30 million annually, while Davante Adams ($28 million) and Cooper Kupp ($26.7 million) aren't far behind.

St. Brown is slated to make $3.4 million next season in the final year of his rookie contract.

The USC product was a Pro Bowler each of the last two seasons and made his first All-Pro team in 2023. His 315 career receptions rank third in NFL history for the most in a player's first three seasons. Only Justin Jefferson (324) and Michael Thomas (321) recorded more in that timeframe.

St. Brown tied for second in the NFL in receptions (119) and was third in yardage (1,515) last season.

The Lions were slated to meet with St. Brown's agent at the scouting combine last week to kickstart talks.

It's no surprise Detroit wants to keep St. Brown around, and both sides are incentivized to get a deal done sooner rather than later. The Lions likely want to ink St. Brown before Jefferson signs an extension that will likely reset the wide receiver market. It would be a major shock if Jefferson's new deal did not top Hill's $30 million annual salary.

As far as St. Brown goes, he's earned just $3.2 million in his career so far. The signing bonus in his new contract could be 10 times that number alone. Waiting for a new contract with the risk of injury looming does not seem like a prudent decision given St. Brown's lack of earnings thus far in his career.
