Lakers' LeBron James Congratulates Caitlin Clark on Breaking NCAA Scoring Record
Iowa guard Caitlin Clark made college basketball history Sunday by passing Pete Maravich's record career total of 3,667 points.
Now she is being congratulated by another record-setting player.
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who on Saturday became the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 points, congratulated Clark on the milestone.
Clark surpassed Maravich's record on a free throw with fractions of a second left in the second quarter against visiting Ohio State.
James previously mentioned Clark when discussing his own points record.
"A lot of you guys have asked, 'What does it feel like to be in a zone?' Once a guy is a zone, there's nothing you can do," James said days after Clark set the all-time women's basketball NCAA scoring record in February, per Zach Harper and Law Murray of The Athletic. "Once a guy decides he wants to stay in a zone– or you're seeing Caitlin the other night, when she broke the record– there's nothing you can do."
The Lakers star wasn't the only basketball great to congratulate Clark on the feat. Four-time WNBA champion Maya Moore was present at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to watch Clark break the record.
Clark announced Thursday that she plans to enter the 2024 WNBA draft instead of returning to the Hawkeyes for her fifth season of eligibility, making this record-breaking outing the last regular-season home game of her college career.
