Raiders' Top Hypothetical Trade Packages for Davante Adams

Alex BallentineFeb 7, 2024

The 2024 season will kick off a new era of Las Vegas Raiders football with Antonio Pierce going from the interim to official head coach and general manager Tom Telesco taking over the reins as the team's chief personnel decision-maker.

The duo will look to take the roster in a different direction than the Josh McDaniels-Dave Ziegler tandem. With the team finishing strong under Pierce last season, there's reason for optimism.

One of the first important decisions they will have to make is what to do with Davante Adams. The veteran receiver is still one of the best in the game, but the Raiders don't necessarily have the best quarterback situation right now and he is still in a position where he could bring back quite the return in a trade.

Adams put up 103 receptions for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns with Aidan O'Connell and Jimmy Garoppolo throwing him the ball.

Adams did throw his support behind Pierce before the Raiders hired him to replace McDaniels so there's a chance he's perfectly happy in Vegas. However, the potential return should be considered for a 31-year-old receiver with a lot of trade value on an offense that still has a ways to go to threaten the top of the AFC.

Here's a look at three hypothetical trades involving Adams that would be worth consideration.

An Aaron Rodgers Reunion

Raiders Receive: 2024 first-round pick (No. 10 overall), 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 111 overall), 2025 second-round pick, 2025 fourth-round pick

Jets Receive: 2024 first-round pick (No. 13 overall), WR Davante Adams

The New York Jets are already putting a lot of eggs in the 2024 basket.

With the investment they've made in Aaron Rodgers and their decision to essentially roll with the same coaching staff and setup next season despite a 7-10 record, they are expecting Rodgers to reverse the team's fortunes.

The Raiders could take advantage of that desperation to get a nice haul of picks from the Jets.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in November that the Jets had internal discussions about trading for the star receiver throughout the summer, but were rejected by the Raiders at the trade deadline. Shortly after McDaniels and Ziegler were fired.

A few weeks later, Schefter reported that the Jets would try to acquire Adams again in the 2024 offseason.

Logistically, it's tough to figure out a trade for the Jets because they already don't have a second-rounder and the 10th pick straight up for Adams is a bit steep given Adams' age and how much they would have to pay him. That's a higher pick than the Eagles gave up for a much younger A.J. Brown.

This scenario is a little more complicated, but it gives the Raiders the advantage of moving up a few spots in the first round which could give them a better shot at a quarterback (if Jayden Daniels were to fall), additional draft firepower if they need to trade up for a quarterback next year or to draft an Adams replacement like Rome Odunze or Malik Nabers.

The Cardinals Go All-in with Kyler Murray

Raiders Receive: 2024 first-round pick (No. 27 overall), 2025 third-round pick

Cardinals Receive: WR Davante Adams

If the Raiders are after adding another first-rounder to this year's draft then the Cardinals are a team that would make sense. They already have two selections as they have the Houston Texans' selection from last year's draft day trade with the Texans.

That pick falls in the late first but they'll already have the No. 4 pick which could bring them a dynamic playmaker. But if they miss out on Marvin Harrison Jr. with that pick, it could leave them with a desire to give Kyler Murray a true No. 1 receiver to get the ball to.

Trading away their second first-round pick could be the easiest path. The Cardinals are ninth in salary cap space so they are in a position to take on a player with a contract like Adams.

Marquise Brown is set to hit free agency and Trey McBride led the team in receiving as a tight end last season. Adding Adams to their offense would change the tone for the entire unit while giving the current regime a chance at showing major progress in its second season.

For the Raiders, this would add a valuable first-round pick as they continue to build this team the way that Telesco and Pierce want to. The additional third-rounder in next seasons draft gives them a stash of draft picks in case they need to move up the board to get a quarterback.

Address Two Major Needs with One Trade

3 of 3
Sam Howell
Sam Howell

Raiders Receive: DT Jonathan Allen, QB Sam Howell, 2024 second-round pick (No. 40 overall)

Commanders Receive: WR Davante Adams

With the No. 2 pick in the draft, it's likely that the Commanders are either going to be starting Drake Maye or Caleb Williams in Week 1 of the 2024 regular season. That leaves Sam Howell, who finished 12th in passing yards this season, with a cloudy future in D.C.

The reality is that it's going to be difficult for the Raiders to bring in one of the best prospects in the draft class at quarterback. They don't pick until 13th which makes it tough to move into the top three without giving up a massive haul of picks and the quarterbacks after Williams, Maye and Jayden Daniels have varying levels of risk associated.

Howell threw 21 interceptions this season, but he was also playing in a pass-happy offense and playing behind an offensive line that allowed him to be sacked 65 times. There's enough promise there for the Raiders to take a shot at letting him compete with Aidan O'Connell for the starting job in 2024.

The real prize in this trade would be bringing in Jonathan Allen, though. The Raiders have the potential to boast a dominant pass rush next season. Maxx Crosby is coming off an All-Pro season. Malcolm Koonce had six sacks after Antonio Pierce took over as head coach and Tyree Wilson should make strides in his second season.

Adding an interior defender of Jonathan Allen's caliber would be a force multiplier for the unit. He had 5.5 sacks last season and ranked 17th in pass-rush win-rate among interior defenders last season.
