Shakur Stevenson Says He's Retiring from Boxing at Age 26 with Undefeated Record
Shakur Stevenson is just 26 years old, but he is apparently retiring from boxing.
He posted as much on social media:
Stevenson is the current WBC lightweight title holder and has a resume that includes a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and belts at the featherweight and super featherweight levels.
While such a retirement is shocking, Scott Christ of SB Nation's Bad Left Hook noted it "will be treated with major skepticism by boxing fans and observers" unless he actually vacates his WBC lightweight title.
"This probably won't be taken much more seriously than Top Rank stablemate Teofimo Lopez's 'shock retirement' last June, which did not last once it was clearly stated to him that he'd have to give up the belt he held at the time," Christ wrote.
Lopez's retirement didn't last long, as he will fight Jamaine Ortiz on Feb. 8.
Stevenson's last fight was a November victory over Edwin De Los Santos in Las Vegas. It was his second win of 2023 after he defeated Shuichiro Yoshino in April.
For his career, he is 21-0 with 10 knockouts.
