Erin WalshJan 19, 2024

John "Jack" Burke Jr., the oldest living Masters champion, died on Friday in Houston, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). He was 100.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement:

"Jackie Burke was a true Hall of Famer who will always be remembered for the style and grace with which he played the game and ran Champions Golf Club. It's hard to measure the impact he had on the game, and his willingness to mentor and help players is legendary. I've admired Jackie and all he has meant to professional golf, and we mourn his death and send our condolences to his family."

The World Golf Hall of Famer turned pro in 1941 and won 16 titles during his time on the PGA Tour. The 1956 season was perhaps his most prolific as he won two majorsโ€”the Masters Tournament and PGA Championship.

Thanks to those two major victories, Burke was named the 1956 PGA Player of the Year, though that's not the only award he won during his lifetime.

Burke was named the 1952 Vardon Trophy winner for leading the PGA Tour in scoring average and he was also given the 2003 PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the tour.

In 2004, Burke was given the Bob Jones Award, which "recognizes an individual who demonstrates the spirit, personal character and respect for the game exhibited by Jones, winner of nine USGA championships."

In addition to playing on the PGA Tour, Burke played on five United States Ryder Cup teams between 1951 and 1959. He captained the United States to victory in 1957 and served as captain for the 1973 winning team, though he did not play in that tournament.

Burke also founded the Champions Golf Club in Houston alongside Jimmy Demaret, where he taught lessons. The club hosted the 1967 Ryder Cup, 1969 U.S. Open and three Tour Championships.
