Hypothetical Trades Raiders Must Consider in 2024 NFL Offseason

Alex BallentineDec 13, 2023

It's about to be a really interesting offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders. It's a franchise that has become used to that sentiment, but this one still manages to stand out.

The Raiders were the first to fire their head coach this season. Antonio Pierce has had an opportunity to shine as the interim, but after a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, it feels less likely that he will be the answer.

That leaves several players with questionable futures as well. The Raiders fired general manager Dave Ziegler along with McDaniels so the decision-makers that brought in a lot of this roster are now gone.

It leaves open the possibility of a lot of player movement for the Raiders this offseason. That could include trades. So here's a look at three hypothetical trades the Raiders should consider.

Trade Away Davante Adams for a First-Round Pick

Raiders Receive: 2024 First-Round Pick

Ravens Receive: WR Davante Adams

Ever since the Raiders moved away from Derek Carr, the relationship between Davante Adams and the organization has felt tenuous at best. He openly questioned the direction the team was going in this offseason and Rich Cimini of ESPN reported the Jets tried to make an offer for Adams at the deadline and could try again in 2024.

If the Raiders continue to be bogged down on offense down the stretch, it's not hard to see Adams wanting to go to a team that could contend right away.

The Jets are still a logical landing spot. He could reunite with Aaron Rodgers in the Big Apple. However, the Ravens should be interested too.

Zay Flowers is coming along nicely as a rookie and Mark Andrews should be back as one of the most dependable receiving tight ends in the league. Adams would be the dominant WR1 this team hasn't had and Odell Beckham hasn't proved he can be.

For the Raiders, it would be an opportunity to get out from under Adams massive contract while gaining another valuable piece to the puzzle of rebuilding. Whoever the new general manager is would get an opportunity to draft another guy he likes without having to plan around a player he didn't bring in.

Trade Away Hunter Renfrow for Draft Capital

Raiders Receive: 2024 sixth-round pick

Saints Receive: WR Hunter Renfrow

The Saints and Raiders were reportedly close on putting together a deal at the trade deadline that would have sent Hunter Renfrow to New Orleans. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media expounded that the finances were the final roadblock the sides couldn't hurdle.

Renfrow carried a $13.1 million cap hit this season and the Saints are always close to the cap during the season so fitting him on their books was a challenge.

But the offseason gives New Orleans the chance to once again push money into the future and open up enough cap space to make some moves. If they want to circle back, Renfrow's 2024 numbers are a little more palatable.

The Raiders would still be on the hook for $5.5 million if they trade Renfrow next season, leaving the $8.2 million left on his $13.7 million cap hit for the team that trades for him. However, it wouldn't be hard for the Saints to add some void years to accommodate the move.

It would give them another receiver with established chemistry with Derek Carr while giving the Raiders a draft pick for an overpriced player that they haven't really included in their game plans this year.

Trade Up for a Quarterback

Until we know the final draft order it's too hard to nail down the specifics of what this might look like, but the Raiders really need to come out of the draft with a new franchise quarterback prospect.

Aidan O'Connell has done some nice things. But he's a fourth-rounder with four touchdowns and seven interceptions thus far. That's not the kind of prospect you stake the future on.

Right now, the Raiders are in position to have the eighth pick in the draft. With Caleb Williams and Drake Maye set to go somewhere in the top three, it would take a pretty aggressive move to get in position to draft them.

If the Raiders manage to move further up the draft board, then giving up a package of picks (and potentially Davante Adams) to move up and take them starts to make sense.

If they stay where they are then moving up the board a few spots to get whoever they like out of Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. then jumping in front of other quarterback-needy teams should be a consideration.

Signing Jimmy Garoppolo and drafting Aidan O'Connell turned out to be a half-measure. It didn't really get the team any closer to finding a franchise-leading quarterback. The draft has to, even if it means giving up some picks in a trade.
