Joe Torre Resigns from MLB Position to Pursue Dodgers Ownership

Adam WellsJun 1, 2018

Joe Torre kept busy after walking away from the Los Angeles Dodgers manager's job following the 2010 season by working in the Major League Baseball front office. But according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the two-time manager of the year is resigning from his current post to join a group attempting to buy the Dodgers.

Bud Selig and Major League Baseball have been trying to get Frank McCourt to sell the Dodgers for months after all of the financial problems that followed his divorce.

Two months ago, it was reported by Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times that McCourt and MLB mutually agreed to auction the team off pending approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Since that was announced, there have been all sorts of rumors about who could be trying to purchase the team, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

A buyer has yet to materialize, and there has been no movement on the sale in the last few weeks. But Torre's pursuit of the franchise will ramp up the speculation and possibly provide some resolution to this whole situation soon.

Selig needs this team to be bought by someone that knows how to manage it properly. The Dodgers are one of the premier franchises in all of North American sports. They play in the second-largest media market in the country.

To have them fall as far as they did in 2011 is sad and embarrassing for MLB. On the field, they were fine. They had the National League Cy Young winner and should have had the MVP, but from a public relations standpoint, they were a disaster.

Torre and his group of investors would be able to bring the franchise back to prominence if they are able to get strike a deal with McCourt and MLB. To be honest, almost anybody would be better for the Dodgers than McCourt at this point.
