NCAA Approves ABS Challenge System as Part of Rule Changes for 2027 Baseball Season

The NCAA announced on Tuesday that the automated ball-strike system has been approved for the next season of collegiate baseball at all levels, per the Associated Press.

In May, the SEC tried out an ABS system during its conference tournament. Major League Baseball also added an ABS system and it has largely been seen as a positive addition to the sport.

At the MLB level, teams start with two challenges and only lose them if they unsuccessfully challenge a balls-and-strike call.

The NCAA will also allow for the use of 18-inch square bases, though 15-inch square bases will remain the standard, while a double first base will now be required.

At the Division I level, a 30-second timer will be employed between batters and for mound visits or offensive timeouts.
