Report: Lakers' LeBron James, Peyton Manning, Planning 'Quarterback'-Style NBA Show
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and NFL legend Peyton Manning have discussed a docuseries that would profile select NBA players on and off the court, according to the Hollywood Reporter's Alex Weprin.
Weprin reported the NBA is expected to be a partner.
The prospective project would be similar to Quarterback, the series that Manning's production company helped create for Netflix. Quarterback followed the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings' Kirk Cousins and Atlanta Falcons' Marcus Mariota during the 2022 NFL season.
The show was generally well received, and Cousins arguably emerged as the star thanks to how he came off.
Weprin's report is somewhat interesting, though, given Manning told Julian Sancton of the Hollywood Reporter in August he was having trouble getting commitments.
"To use a cheesy analogy, we're definitely in the two-minute drill here," the five-time MVP said. "I'd love for someone to call us back and say, 'I want to do it.' I had three starting quarterbacks tell me no yesterday, so I'm swallowing my pride."
Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen told reporters earlier in August he had reservations about whether having cameras follow him would be a bit of a distraction. Others went on the record to say they had been approached and turned down the chance.
Netflix has signed on for a second season of Quarterback, so it may not be a case of Manning looking for a direct replacement. Perhaps NBA alternative could be equally successful, though, without the headaches in terms of finding willing contributors.
