Why DeSean Jackson's Apology to Philadelphia Eagles Is Too Little, Too Late

Ryan PhillipsJan 3, 2012

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson apologized Sunday for allowing his contract situation to become a distraction for the team this season and said he would accept the team using its franchise tag on him if the two sides fail to agree to a long-term contract.

Well that was nice of Jackson to apologize after being a total distraction all season and acting like a malcontent through the team's first few games. Really DeSean? Now that the year is over and the Eagles finished 8-8 and had one of the most disappointing seasons in NFL history, you apologize and claim that you'll be OK with making nearly $10 million next season if the team puts the franchise tag on you. I'm sure you'd be suffering making that kind of cash.

While I actually do appreciate Jackson admitting he was wrong, it rings hollow considering that his numbers were down this season. The 25-year-old finished the year with 58 catches for 961 yards and just four touchdowns. In fact, he may not even be the best receiver on the team anymore as Jeremy Maclin and Steve Smith are now in town.

While Smith battled injuries all season, if he returns to full health next season he might end up being a more reliable option than Jackson.

I personally think the Cal product's apology came because he realizes his stock dropped this year and he needs to get a long-term deal done. He wants to appear as committed as possible to the team in order to make that happen.

Had he apologized a month ago or longer, I might buy it, but doing it now after the season is over seems a tad disingenuous.
