NBA Draft 2023 Rumors: Gradey Dick Viewed as Best Shooter in Class by 'Many Teams'
Kansas standout Gradey Dick has a lot of fans in the NBA as he prepares for the 2023 draft.
Per ESPN's Jonathan Givony, Dick is viewed as the best shooter in this year's class by "many NBA teams."
"He has elite footwork, balance and confidence running off screens, pulling up off the dribble and drifting into spot-up three-pointers with excellent mechanics and range," Givony wrote.
Dick is seen as a potential top-10 pick by analysts. Givony named him as the best fit for the Orlando Magic at No. 6 but noted they "might hope" he's still on the board when they make their second pick at 11.
The Magic have two young foundational pieces already. Paolo Banchero was a near-unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year after being drafted No. 1 overall last summer. Franz Wagner averaged 18.6 points per game on 48.5 percent field-goal shooting this season.
Orlando was tied with the Los Angeles Lakers as the sixth-worst three-point shooting team during the 2022-23 regular season (34.6 percent). Banchero, who shot 29.9 percent from behind the arc, has to improve in that area to reach his full potential.
Dick was a 247Sports 5-star recruit coming out of high school last year. He had an excellent freshman campaign for the Jayhawks, averaging 14.1 points per game on 40.1 percent three-point shooting.
B/R's Jonathan Wasserman, who sent Dick to the Utah Jazz at No. 9 in his most recent mock draft, called the 19-year-old a "sure-thing" shooter.
Even if Dick ends up being limited as a playmaker—he averaged just 1.7 assists per game in 36 starts last season—his size (6'8") and shooting touch should make him a valuable starter early in his NBA career.
The Magic could be a surprisingly good team in the Eastern Conference next season if they hit on their two lottery picks. They finished with a winning record over their final 57 games (29-28) after a dreadful 5-20 start this season.
