Making the Toughest Picks on the WWE WrestleMania 39 Match Card

Doc-Chris MuellerMar 29, 2023

The card for WrestleMania 39 is stacked with title bouts, grudge matches, longtime rivalries and even a father vs. son showdown.

With over a dozen matches on the show, roughly half of which have championships on the line, there should be something for everybody to enjoy this weekend.

The show will be split between two nights on Saturday and Sunday, but other than a couple of the key contests, we don't know which matches will end up on which night.

Some of the results are predictable, but there are a handful of contests on the card that are much harder to judge the outcome based on the stories WWE has been telling.

Take Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes for example. The American Nightmare (-550) is heavily favored to defeat The Tribal Chief (+325), according to BetOnline.

Other bouts, such as the Triple Threat for the Intercontinental Championship, are much harder to call. Let's take a look at some of the bouts with the slimmest odds and make some picks.

Edge (+100) vs. Finn Bálor (-140)

1 of 5

The feud between The Judgment Day and Edge feels like it has been going on for far too long, but thankfully it looks like the final chapter will be written this weekend.

Edge will battle Finn Bálor in a singles match that has some of the closest odds on the card. Right now, the Irishman is the slight favorite to win, but there is a reason this isn't as cut and dried as some other contests.

This storyline has featured singles bouts, mixed tag matches, random attacks and long periods of inactivity due to Edge's schedule. Fans are ready to move on and so are the wrestlers involved judging by the fact that Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio have both been focusing on their own goals recently.

If the purpose of this feud was to get The Judgment Day over as a dominant stable, then there is only one right outcome. Bálor needs to be victorious, and since he appears to be bringing The Demon persona to WrestleMania, that outcome seems like more of a lock.

The Demon has only lost one match on the main roster and that was against Roman Reigns, so we have been conditioned to believe Bálor will win whenever he puts on the paint.

We have no reason to think this time will end any differently.

Pick: Finn Bálor

Men's WrestleMania Showcase Match

2 of 5

Since both sets of tag team championships are tied up in The Usos vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens match, WWE has opted to give the tag team division another way to be featured.

Four teams will compete this weekend to determine who gets the next shot at the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships in a WrestleMania Tag Team Showcase match.

Here is a look at the odds as they stand:

  • Braun Strowman and Ricochet (+100)
  • Viking Raiders (+135)
  • Street Profits (+175)
  • Alpha Academy (+1400)

As you can see, Chad Gable and Otis are seen as the underdogs in this bout, but the other three teams are relatively close.

While Ricochet and Strowman are the slight favorites, the best option would be to give The Street Profits the win, especially if there are no plans to break up Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins anytime soon.

The Profits have maintained their immense popularity despite not having much to do in recent months. Management wants to give fans as many feel-good moments as possible at WrestleMania, and having Ford and Dawkins get the W would be a great way to do that.

Pick: The Street Profits

Dominik Mysterio (-140) vs. Rey Mysterio (+100)

3 of 5

After months of buildup, tension and family drama, Rey and Dominik Mysterio will finally step into the ring for an epic father vs. son battle.

A lot of people come from pro wrestling families, but WWE has rarely featured a dad fighting his own son. We have seen brother vs. brother, sister vs. sister and cousin vs. cousin, but watching a parent fight his child is something we just don't get very often.

According to the odds, Dom is the slight favorite to win this weekend, but the close numbers indicate a lot of people think Rey still has a chance, and it's easy to see why.

While it would make total sense for WWE to give Dom the win to build a new star's momentum, management also likes to book the outcome that will get the best reaction from the crowd.

Rey defeating his ungrateful son in front of thousands of fans at SoFi Stadium would get a huge pop from the California crowd, and it would also allow WWE to keep the story going if it wants to.

However, if WWE wants to give The Judgment Day a boost, booking all three members with matches on the card to win would be a good way to do it.

Pick: Dominik Mysterio

Asuka (-130) vs. Bianca Belair (-110)

4 of 5

By far the closest match according to the odds is Asuka vs. Bianca Belair for the Raw Women's Championship. Only 20 points separate the two competitors.

One of the reasons this match is so tough to call is that both women winning makes sense. No matter who walks away with the belt, the Raw women's division will have an amazing performer leading the way.

Asuka recently underwent a character change that saw her take on a more sinister persona. The face paint and mist are all scare tactics, but there is no denying how much more aggressive she has gotten in her matches.

The EST of WWE has been the champ for just a little more than a year after winning the belt from Becky Lynch. Her reign has seen her beat some of the toughest competitors WWE can throw at her, but this version of Asuka is unlike anyone she has ever fought.

It feels like management wants to make The Empress of Tomorrow into a major attraction, so the odds being slightly in her favor makes sense. It wouldn't be surprising to see Belair retain, but Asuka is probably leaving with the title.

Pick: Asuka

Sheamus (+120) vs. Gunther (+100) vs. Drew McIntyre (+300)

5 of 5

This WrestleMania card is stacked. Matches like Reigns vs. Rhodes and The Usos vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have sold a lot of tickets, but one of the most physical bouts this weekend is going to be the Intercontinental Championship match.

Gunther, Sheamus and Drew McIntyre will do battle in a Triple Threat that will see the three European powerhouses leave each other battered and bruised.

We have already seen what all of these competitors can do against each other, but putting all three in the ring together is going to bring a new level of intensity. If any contest on the card is going to draw blood, it's this one.

Right now, Gunther is the slight favorite to win. McIntyre is the least likely according to the odds, which puts Sheamus right in the middle.

The leader of Imperium has held the belt for almost 300 days. He has taken on and defeated many great competitors, but this will be his greatest challenge because he doesn't have to lose the match to relinquish the belt.

Sheamus has talked a lot about how the IC title is the only accolade that has eluded him in WWE during his career, and considering he has been one of the company's most reliable performers for many years, it's not out of the realm of possibility that management wants to give him a big moment.

It's a tossup between Sheamus and Gunther right now. Either would be an acceptable winner, but unfortunately for The Celtic Warrior, The Ring General has backup in the form of Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci.

With some help from his cohorts, Gunther winning is the safest bet, but only by a slender margin.

Pick: Gunther
