Adrian Peterson Will Announce Decision on NFL Future, Retirement in Coming Weeks
Veteran running back Adrian Peterson didn't play during the 2022 season, and more clarity regarding the status of his career reportedly will come soon.
According to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson, Peterson is "currently targeting end of the month or April for a formal announcement on his NFL career and future."
A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Peterson last played during the 2021 season. He appeared in three games for the Tennessee Titans and one game with the Seattle Seahawks that year, totaling 38 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. He became the only player ever to score a rushing touchdown with six different teams.
Peterson, who will turn 38 later this month, is one of the best running backs of his generation. He was named NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 when he recorded 348 carries for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns. He's a seven-time All-Pro selection, earning first-team honors four times.
Peterson ranks fifth in NFL history with 14,918 career rushing yards and fourth with 120 rushing touchdowns. He trails Barry Sanders by 351 yards for fourth all-time.
Despite Peterson's age, there's a chance he could still contribute to an NFL team in the right situation. In 2020, he registered 156 carries as a backup running back for the Detroit Lions. The Oklahoma product has never had the opportunity to play in a Super Bowl.
If Peterson decides to call it a career, he will join a star-studded retirement class that includes Tom Brady and J.J. Watt. They would all become eligible for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2028.
