Way-Too-Early AEW Double or Nothing 2023 Match Card Predictions

Kevin BergeMar 8, 2023

AEW Revolution 2023 delivered beyond expectations, highlighting the AEW original talent in many ways and setting a major standard for All Elite Wrestling's 2023 pay-per-views.

The next event on the PPV calendar is Double or Nothing, which has always been one of the biggest wrestling nights of the year.

Following Revolution, MJF needs a fresh challenger for his world title; Hangman Adam Page, Ricky Starks and Jungle Boy all won big; House of Black took down The Elite; and Jamie Hayter remains the gold standard of the women's division.

At this point, it is not clear where any story will go up to May 28. Even stories set up at Revolution could resolve in the next two months before DoN.

Predicting the card is a fool's errand, but it is a fun exercise to wonder what would be the best way to continue the momentum of one of AEW's best shows to date.

Anarchy in the Arena: Blackpool Combat Club vs. The Elite

1 of 9

Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page have been at each other's throats for months, and that story seemed to come to its end after a brutal Texas Death match.

However, there is plenty of untapped potential left in the battle. In particular, The Elite remain an interesting anomaly in all of this.

The Elite vs. BCC is the biggest stable battle AEW could put together, and the seeds have been planted.

If Page is not done with BCC, whether it be Mox, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta or Bryan Danielson, he will need help and could recruit his old friends after reconciling with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks.

The other option would be to get Dark Order involved, and that could be a great option to keep the core rivalry moving. However, The Elite will always be the bigger stars and easier picks for the pay-per-view.

Double or Nothing has always had one stable warfare match. Both teams have experience in this spot at Double or Nothing, though only BCC have competed directly in Anarchy in the Arena.

Swerve Strickland vs. Keith Lee

2 of 9

Revolution had a shorter card than usual thanks to the 60-Minute Iron Man main event. This affected Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee, who were left to compete in a tag team bout at Rampage.

This feud needs a major stage for one final battle. Whether it is a straight-up wrestling match or a brutal No Holds Barred fight, these two deserve that spotlight.

The one concern with this match getting its spotlight is that AEW could be looking to complete the 2023 Owen Hart Foundation Tournament at this event.

If so, both could be involved in that too much to finish their own rivalry before it grows stale.

This match needs to happen with the same level of reverence that is given to the regular Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley spotlights.

Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole

3 of 9

Chris Jericho will always get his spot on an AEW PPV card. He has run through many of the top names in the company already, but he and Adam Cole have untapped potential together.

The Owen Hart Foundation men's winner has not had a chance to fully meet his potential in AEW. He is clearly a highly valued performer, but even before his unfortunate concussion, Cole was more challenger than champion.

He can become a top guy in AEW, especially as a newly turned babyface. However, he needs a feud that can reintroduce him as a major star.

Cole vs. Jericho is an easy money match. The veteran can reestablish the former NXT champion and set him up as an interesting future challenger to MJF.

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh

AEW TBS Championship: Jade Cargill (c) vs. Toni Storm

4 of 9

Jade Cargill missed out on Revolution, leaving the event with just one women's match. That cannot happen again.

However, the TBS champion cannot continue to just wrestle easy opponents. The company must build a big name to contend with her.

Why not get Cargill involved in the ongoing battle of AEW originals and outsiders? Saraya, Toni Storm and Ruby Soho have stuck their flag in the sand.

Cargill has straddled the line between face and heel before, and she is an original star for AEW. She can benefit from working against established names.

Storm has arguably been the MVP of the women's division since she arrived, putting on great matches with everyone. She can give Cargill her best match while making many question if the titleholder could finally lose.

AEW Trios Championships: House of Black (c) vs. Death Triangle

5 of 9

House of Black pulled off a surprise victory over The Elite to capture the AEW Trios Championships at Revolution. The next couple of months should continue to build Malakai Black, Brody King and Buddy Matthews.

It is hard to say which trio will challenge them first, but AEW would be smart to go back to a feud that helped make the titles a possibility in the first place.

House of Black and Death Traingle have been after each other for a long time. It is a match that has always worked, and PAC, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo deserve a spot on the card.

While it could be seen as a retread, this can be set up with a unique stipulation to end the rivalry for good. A street fight or ladder match would make sense.

All Atlantic Championship: Orange Cassidy (c) vs. Darby Allin

6 of 9

Orange Cassidy has been a fantastic All Atlantic champion. At every turn, he has worked with someone fresh and put on a great performance.

He did not get a chance to defend his title at the last PPV, fighting for the AEW Tag Team Championships instead. This should not continue into Double or Nothing.

The star who makes the most sense to challenge Freshly Squeezed would be a company original who missed the Revolution card. Darby Allin is an integral part of AEW and can put on a great and unique match against Cassidy.

This is a complete toss-up. There is no obvious opponent for Cassidy, but a match with Allin is an easy win for AEW.

AEW Tag Team Championships: The Gunns (c) vs. FTR

7 of 9

The rematch of The Gunns vs. FTR is on the way. Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler returned at Revolution and immediately attacked Austin and Colten Gunn.

It would be easy to immediately book that match and switch the titles, but it would be far more interesting to wait until a big stage. FTR can give The Gunns their best match to date with the right story.

Fans will only hate Austin and Colten more with each week they remain champions. FTR's chase for the titles needs hurdles that will make the final results all the sweeter.

If the teams can sustain the story for two months, this could be a sleeper hit where the entire crowd will be behind the challengers to dethrone the heel champions.

AEW Women's Championship: Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Thunder Rosa

8 of 9

Jamie Hayter should be AEW women's champion for a long time. She has defeated multiple top contenders along the way and needs a fresh competitor rather than revisiting Toni Storm, Saraya or Ruby Soho.

Thunder Rosa is certain to be back soon, and she has unfinished business with the AEW Women's Championship, as well as a built-in rivalry with Hayter.

As a long-term rival of Britt Baker, La Mera Mera cannot immediately work with the AEW originals in the larger story of the women's division.

This can be the first act in Rosa earning the respect of her peers while putting on a great match with the current champion.

While these two have wrestled before, this would be a different dynamic to keep the crowd invested in the women's division.

AEW World Championship: MJF (c) vs. Jungle Boy

9 of 9

Now that MJF has put Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson behind him, the AEW champion must find a fresh opponent for the future. Three men stood out as future challengers coming out of Revolution.

While "Hangman" Adam Page and Ricky Starks both can be great with MJF, both have other stories left to tell on the road to Double or Nothing.

"Jungle Boy" Jack Perry has finished his tale with Christian Cage and looks poised to take the next step toward gold. He also has history with The Salt of the Earth.

The 25-year-old was the first man to really show that MJF can wrestle at a high level following their match at Double or Nothing in 2020. Both are also members of the young Four Pillars of AEW along with Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara.

The Salt of the Earth has consistently shown disdain for the three men placed at his level, and it would make sense for him to start proving himself as the best of them.

It is hard to follow up the great start the AEW world champion has had with Jon Moxley, Ricky Starks and Bryan Danielson. But Jungle Boy is the perfect man to push MJF to play a different game, working for once as the favorite and not the underdog.
