UFC 141 Results: 3 Things Jon Fitch Must Improve
Jon Fitch is a skilled fighter, but even the best of fighters have things they could improve.
Fitch had put together a great UFC record of 13-1-1 and was showing fans that he deserved a title shot...until he met Johny Hendricks at UFC 141.
Hendricks knocked Fitch out in only 12 seconds (and the KO was so bad that Fitch was fighting referee Steve Mazzagatti).
So what can Jon Fitch improve on so that this doesn't happen again? Read and find out!
Striking Defense
1 of 4After getting knocked out like that, striking defense is a crucial area to improve.
This area has always been Fitch's most lacking, though. Look at his fight with UFC welterweight champion Georges St.Pierre.
Fitch got tagged repeatedly throughout the fight and bloodied up worse than he had ever been.
Aggressiveness
2 of 4People don't like Jon Fitch because they feel he never tries to finish the fight, that he just uses "lay and pray" to get a decision victory.
Being more aggressive would've helped Fitch against Hendricks because if he looked for the takedown (either through a shot or clinching) before power-puncher Hendricks hit him, he could have won the fight.
An increase in aggressiveness would also earn Fitch some more fans, since he might become more exciting as a result.
Personality/Marketability
3 of 4It's hard for a fighter to improve this because people are who they are.
But just look at what Chael Sonnen has done for his career by becoming a trash talker (although he would just say he's telling the truth and not talking trash).
Fitch should've been doing Sonnen-type antics while being ignored for the title shot. Fitch himself has noted the loudest talkers get the most attention, so why not employ those tactics to his advantage?
Conclusion
4 of 4Jon Fitch is an excellent fighter who doesn't have much to improve.
His wrestling and ability to control people are phenomenal; it's just his striking and aggressiveness that are a little behind the curve.
Also, if he were to be more personable and maybe draw more attention to himself, he could become a figure who people want to pay to see get beat up, rather than a fighter fans hate so much they won't pay to see him at all.
