US Open Odds 2022: Latest Vegas Lines for Underrated Sleepers in the Field

Jake RillJun 14, 2022

Among the favorites to win the 2022 U.S. Open are Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and more. Those are the big names in golf, and it wouldn't be a surprise if any of them are atop the leaderboard come Sunday evening.

But major tournaments aren't always won by the golfers who had the best odds entering the event. Sleepers and heavy underdogs sometimes have surprise performances and end up winning prestigious titles, and that could be the case this week.

This year's U.S. Open gets underway Thursday in Brookline, Mass., at The Country Club, which is hosting the event for the first time since 1988, and the fourth time overall. And the tournament will be filled with strong competition.

Will one of the favorites be victorious, or could a sleeper emerge as the champion? Here's a look at several golfers who fit into the latter category, along with their odds to win the tournament, per DraftKings Sportsbook.

Sungjae Im (+4000)

Sungjae Im has been playing consistently well over the past two months. He had a strong showing at the Masters Tournament in April, when he shot a 67 in the opening round and ended up tied for eighth. And he's finished 21st or better in four tournaments since then.

Two weeks ago, Im tied for 10th at the Memorial Tournament, shooting a 70 or better in three of the four rounds. So he's heading into the U.S. Open with some decent momentum, which could result in yet another solid showing.

Perhaps Im will even be in contention for the win deep into the weekend. He's never won a major tournament, but he's had some solid showings in them of late. The 24-year-old has made the cut at the U.S. Open each of the past two years, and he has five top-35 finishes in majors since the start of 2020. Plus, he didn't get to play in the PGA Championship last month after testing positive for COVID-19, so he could have had a strong showing there as well if had been in the field.

It would be a bit surprising if Im won the U.S. Open, but a top-10 finish isn't out of the question. He may even end up in the top five. So those would be better bets to make. But at odds of +4000, it could be worth taking a chance by placing a small wager on Im to win, too.

Harold Varner III (+6500)

Harold Varner III doesn't have many great finishes in major tournaments. His best came at this year's Masters Tournament, in which he tied for 23rd. He also doesn't have much U.S. Open experience, having missed the cut in his only two previous appearances in 2013 and 2018.

So if Varner won the 2022 U.S. Open—or if he's even in contention for the victory on Sunday—it would be a vast improvement from his previous showings at golf's most prestigious events. But it wouldn't be a surprise if the 31-year-old fares better than he has at past majors.

Varner has made the cut at each of his past eight tournaments, a run that began when he tied for sixth at The Players Championship in March. He played really well in April, tying for third at the RBC Heritage and tying for fourth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. And he's coming off a 13th-place finish at last week's RBC Canadian Open.

Those recent results make Varner a solid sleeper to bet on this week. He may be a long shot to win, but he enters with a lot of momentum, having shot a 68 or better in six of his past eight rounds. He should easily make the U.S. Open cut for the first time and may have a strong weekend to follow.

Keegan Bradley (+8000)

It would be an incredible story if Keegan Bradley found a way to win the U.S. Open this weekend. The 36-year-old grew up in New England and spent his final year of high school living in Hopkinton, Mass. So he's quite familiar with the areas surrounding The Country Club.

Bradley knows the significance of playing in a major tournament so close to home, too.

“It’s no secret that this is going to be a tough week because of how much I want to play well, and when you try too hard to make it happen, it never works out," Bradley said, per Cameron Morfit of PGATour.com.

Bradley has played well for most of 2022, though. He finished fifth at The Players Championship in March, and shortly after, he had an impressive streak of strong performances at the Valero Texas Open (tied for eighth), the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (tied for fourth) and the Wells Fargo Championship (tied for second).

Although Bradley didn't fare as well at his two most recent tournaments—the PGA Championship (tied for 48th) and the Memorial Tournament (tied for 37th)—this could be an opportunity for him to get back on track. So why not bet on the hometown golfer to fare well? He'll be motivated to have a strong showing, and perhaps that will lead to success.
