2012 Pro Bowl: Tim Tebow Landing a Roster Spot Would Be Embarrassment for NFL

Eric BallDec 27, 2011

Dear NFL,

Please keep Tim Tebow as far away as possible from the 2012 Pro Bowl.

Somehow, some way, a guy that was ranked third on his own team’s depth chart to begin the season has managed to become the second alternate in the AFC Pro Bowl vote.

Tom Brady is the obvious choice for No. 1, and Ben Roethlisberger isn’t too far behind at No. 2. You can argue whether Phillip Rivers deserves the third spot over rookie Andy Dalton, but either way both of them are ahead of the “Mile High Messiah.”

How in the world can a quarterback (you know, a player that throws the ball for a living) complete less than 50 percent of his passes and still be considered a Pro Bowler? It’s almost laughable at times to watch him airmail a 10-yard slant with a wide open receiver just shaking his head as he runs back to the huddle. For the year he has thrown for 1,669 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 128 passing yards per game not only rank him dead last in the league, but it also is 24 yards a game less than the incredibly awful Blaine Gabbert.

Tebow’s inability to hit receivers in the numbers has forced him to make multiple miracle comebacks. If he just made more accurate throws in the first three quarters, he wouldn’t need to give the entire city of Denver a weekly heart attack.

Sure he’s 7-3 as a starter, but do you think it was a coincidence that the defense landed with Pro Bowlers today? LB Elvis Dumervil, CB Champ Bailey and LB Von Miller have been the real reason the Broncos are a game away from the postseason. Without that trio and a rejuvenated RB Willis McGahee, this team is more of a pony than a bronco.

The fourth-quarter comebacks against the likes of bad teams like the Dolphins, Vikings, Bears and Chargers have certainly defied logic; just remember the competition he’s doing it against. His best win of the season was over an 8-7 Raiders team that was starting Carson Palmer for the first time after he was sitting on his couch eating Cheetos for the first month of the season.

Tebow has been exposed the past two weeks as teams gather more film on the unconventional QB, and the imminent end to Tebow time is near. The Broncos have been outscored by a whopping 44 points in their last two games, including a 40-14 shellacking at the hands of a Bills team that hadn’t won a game since Halloween.

The fan vote was a big help for Tebow because that’s all they know. ESPN is shoving Tebow down our throats at an unprecedented level. It’s Tebow’s league and everyone else is lucky to play in it…or so the media would lead you to believe. The over-hyped No. 15 surely got a huge Pro Bowl boost because of this, which crushes the credibility of being selected. This isn’t a popularity contest; this is an honor reserved for only the best and most talented gridiron greats.

Tebow certainly doesn’t qualify.

So when considering replacements for Brady and Big Ben, who both will surely skip the exhibition, think of guys like Joe Flacco (3,480 yards, 19 TDs) or Matt Hasselbeck (3,274 yards 16TDs), QBs that are familiar with the forward pass.

Brian Urlacher may have been using a heavy dose of sarcasm when calling Tebow “a pretty good running back,” but he wasn’t far off.

Tebow doesn’t deserve to wear a Hawaiian lei and get the opportunity to mingle with all of the other top talent in the AFC, he deserves to watch at home and study what real quarterbacks in the NFL look like.

Sincerely,

Every NFL fan that isn't influenced by the ridiculous Tebow hype machine.
