Cavaliers Rumors: Tyronn Lue Won't Return vs. Nets; May Be Back for Heat Game

Tim DanielsMar 24, 2018

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue reportedly didn't travel with the team to New York City ahead of Sunday's game against the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center.

On Saturday, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reported it's still possible Lue could return to the bench before the end of the Cavs' three-game road trip, which also includes stops to face the Miami Heat on Tuesday and the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old coach announced Monday he was taking a leave of absence to focus on his health after dealing with "chest pains and other troubling symptoms, compounded by a loss of sleep."

"After many conversations with our doctors and Koby [Altman] and much thought given to what is best for the team and my health, I need to step back from coaching for the time being and focus on trying to establish a stronger and healthier foundation from which to coach for the rest of the season," Lue said.

Acting head coach Larry Drew said Friday the team has come together and "rallied" around their ailing leader while waiting for him to come back.

"And I think for our team, we really rallied, No. 1, around Coach Lue, when the organization made the decision that he was going to step away for a few games," Drew told reporters. "We rallied around him, we rallied around one another."

The Cavaliers, who started their current four-game winning streak just before Lue stepped away, haven't confirmed an official timetable for his return.

Cleveland's next home game is Friday night against the New Orleans Pelicans.
