Alan Branch Wins Suspension Appeal: Latest Details and Reaction
New England Patriots defensive lineman Alan Branch has reportedly won his appeal of a pending four-game NFL suspension.
Field Yates of ESPN.com first reported the news Saturday, which means the defensive tackle is available to play in the team's Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Mike Petraglia of WEEI confirmed the report.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the NFL rescinded the suspension before Branch's formal appeal.
Nick Shook of NFL.com noted Branch was notified of the possible ban Nov. 21 for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.
Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald passed along comments from the defender, who stated he didn't know how he could have failed a drug test.
"That's why I'm appealing it," Branch said. "We'll see what happens from there."
The 31-year-old Michigan product is enjoying perhaps his best all-around season at the pro level. He's tallied 39 combined tackles, a sack and a forced fumble across 11 games. His next tackle will set a new career high in his 10th year.
The Patriots previously suspended Branch for one week in August for an undisclosed reason. Doug Kyed of NESN shared the lineman's remarks upon his return during the preseason:
"If Bill (Belichick) isn't telling you, I'm not saying a damn thing. I guarantee that. If you're looking for something from me, it isn't happening. I'm just happy to be out here and get ready to play against the (New York) Giants (in the preseason finale). I'm glad to be out here with my teammates. We're all grinding for the same goal. That's where we are right now.
"
New England had already begun preparing for his potential absence by claiming fellow defensive tackle Darius Kilgo off waivers from the Denver Broncos this week, per Howe. Now it appears the reinforcement won't be necessary.
With the suspension nullified, Branch should remain a key component in the middle of the Patriots line alongside Malcom Brown as the team sets its sights on another deep playoff run.
