FT - Norway 3, Senegal 2

Norway v Senegal -World Cup

One of the more intriguing matchups in the group stage exceeded expectations in spectacular fashion. Norway and Senegal delivered the end-to-end action fans anticipated, given the talent on both teams. Only one of the teams has one of the world's most prolific goal scorers. Scoring 59 goals in 52 caps for Norway, Erling Haaland continues to lead his country to new heights.

It only took three minutes for Norway to extend their lead in the second half. A devastating counterattack led by captain Martin Odegaard, driving the ball forward on a four-on-two break, gave them a golden opportunity to score. There was only one pass he was going to make, with Haaland accelerating into the box to his left. A beautiful ball between the heart of Senegal's defense gave the superstar striker what he needed to get on the score sheet. He decisively blasted his shot into the top right corner for an emphatic finish.

Conceding so early in the second half would have left most teams shell-shocked. Senegal responded five minutes later with a terrific team goal. Idrissa Gueye passed forward to Sadio Mane, who hit a first-time flick brillaintly to connect with Ismaila Sarr on the edge of the box. The Crystal Palace star made a clever run to get on the end of Mane's fine work to score acrobatically. The celebrations would be short-lived.

As he did for most of the first half, right back Marcus Holmgrem Pedersen made a dangerous run to get in behind Senegal's back line. He did enough to slide the ball into the middle of the box, where Antonio Nusa nearly connected on the cutback. What initially looked like a defensive clearance quickly turned into substitute Patrick Berg finding space to put a ball in for Haaland to strike. The superstar striker would leave no doubt with another clinical goal five minutes after Senegal scored.

Senegal never looked dejected despite falling behind 3-1. They consistently pushed forward to get back into the game. Their efforts would be rewarded with Sarr adding his second goal of the night. Playing right through Norway's defense once again, Nicolas Jackson created space to find the prolific winger for an excellent finish. It wouldn't be enough for the Lions of Teranga. Norway would hold on for a massive win to advance into the knockout stage. They will square off against France with the opportunity to win Group I. Senegal will need to win by a heavy margin against Iraq to have any chance of advancing as one of the eight third-place teams.

FT - France 3, Iraq 0

France v Iraq -World Cup

It's been an unexpected journey due to a severe thunderstorm, but France won as expected, advancing to the knockout stage. They played significantly better in the second half for the second consecutive game. Kylian Mbappe was outstanding again, the star-studded attack around him was heavily influential in a dominant performance for one of the best teams in the world.

For the second straight match, a calamitous mistake involving the goalkeeper doomed Iraq. Ahmed Basil Fadhi never anticipated the short pass from center back Zaid Tahseen, leading to a mad scramble in their box. That colossal error allowed Ousmane Dembele to pounce on the golden opportunity. Instead of trying to score his first-ever World Cup goal, he made the right decision to coolly lay it off for Mbappe to give France a two-goal lead.

That goal injected some creative magic into Les Bleus. The chances started to pile up for France, and it wouldn't take long for Dembele, the 2025 Ballon d'Or winner, to score his long-awaited first goal at the World Cup.

Iraq showed spirit, but it was a comfortable win for France. While Mbappe will be slightly frustrated that he didn't produce a hat trick after coming close multiple times, it's been a sensational start to the tournament for the 2022 Golden Boot winner.

A highly anticipated match against Norway could decide who wins Group I.

It's been a strong start for the two-time World champions. In ugly conditions, they have been largely in command with their slick passing and sheer physicality. For all their firepower going forward, Didier Deschamps' squad is one of the most imposing sides in the world. Led by their tremendous back four and fantastic goalkeeper, they complement the plethora of world-class attacking talent very well.

Building off his memorable performance against Senegal, it only took 14 minutes for Kylian Mbappe to add his latest highlight-reel goal to an extraordinary World Cup resume. Michael Olise passed it to him from the right, where Mbappe was waiting for the ball on the edge of the box. Iraq's defense sat off him, which was a costly decision. France's all-time leading goal scorer bent in a curler with his weaker foot in stunning fashion. There was enough power with the bend for the shot to make it past Iraq's goalkeeper Ahmed Basil Fadhil.

France hasn't created many clear chances, as Iraq has defended admirably. Ousamane Dembele and Bradley Barcola have shown flashes, beating defenders in isolation with exceptional footwork and pace to put dangerous balls into the box. Those moments didn't result in any shots on target. As proven in their first game, France can turn it on at any time. The rainstorm could prevent them from reaching the same heights as last Tuesday.

FT - Argentina 2, Austria 0

Argentina v Austria: Group J - FIFA World Cup 2026

Lionel Messi claimed sole possession of the FIFA Men's World Cup goalscoring record as Argentina secured a 2-0 victory over Austria in Arlington, Texas.

The 38-year-old's shining moment came with a goal of fitting quality shortly before half-time. A sweeping Argentina move saw left-back Facundo Medina find space on the left-hand side, and his cutback allowed Messi to coolly slide the ball past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

It was Messi's 17th World Cup goal and saw him overtake Germany's Miroslav Klose, with whom he drew level on Wednesday with a hat-trick against Algeria, and he extended his lead at the top of the leaderboard with his 18th in second-half stoppage time.

With Austria chasing the game, Messi set Julio Álvarez through on goal, followed up on the striker's blocked effort and then smuggled the ball past a host of opposing defenders to secure the victory.

Messi had earlier wasted a glorious opportunity to secure the record after Lautaro Martínez was awarded a penalty in the game's opening stages. If there has been one weakness throughout Messi's career, though, it has been from the penalty spot — his wayward effort was his third penalty miss in seven World Cup attempts.

Argentina and Messi flashed moments of brilliance throughout without ever moving out of second gear, and they largely kept Austria at arm's length. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez wasn't troubled outside of a Marcel Sabitzer free-kick shortly after half-time, and only a Patrick Wimmer header in stoppage time prior to Messi's second threatened Argentina's lead outside of that.

Argentina v Austria: Group J - FIFA World Cup 2026

Lionel Messi became the all-time record FIFA Men's World Cup goalscorer as Argentina took a 1-0 lead into half-time against Austria in Arlington, Texas.

The 38-year-old finished off a sweeping move in the 39th minute, latching on to Facundo Medina's cutback and slotting the ball home to record his 17th goal on the World Cup stage and overtake Germany's Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time leaderboard.

Argentina could've made the perfect start after being awarded a penalty in the seventh minute. Lautaro Martinez sliced through the opposition defense before finding himself as the meat in the sandwich between Stefan Posch and Xavier Schlager, with a foul awarded after a lengthy video review. Messi, though, put his attempt wide of Alexander Schlager's left-hand post.

Messi was predictably involved in all of Argentina's best attacking moments, with both he and Enzo Fernandez going close prior to the opener, while his team's defense has held firm under brief spells of pressure from Austria.
