Broncos vs. Bills: 5 Things We Learned from Buffalo's 40-14 Win
All of the problems that had been storing up during the Bills' seven-game losing streak were lifted away today, as the Bills were not in the holiday giving mood to Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos.
The Bills came away with a 40-14 win, and in the process, may have dealt a serious blow to the Broncos title hopes in the AFC West.
With apologies to Bills fans, today's version is going to have to shorter than normal.
Dealing with a very bad stomach virus, so we will move on the story.
Tim Tebow Throws Interceptions Left and Right
1 of 5Tim Tebow wound up with four pass interceptions on the day. He had been pretty careful with the football leading up to the Bills game, but that wasn't the case today.
Spencer Johnson, Jairus Byrd, Aaron Williams and Justin Rogers all turned interceptions. Johnson and Byrd wound up with consecutive drive pick six's in the fourth quarter to extend their lead from 26-14 to 40-14.
The Bills pass defense kept Tebow contained, as he only hit on 13-of-30 passes for 185 yards, an average of 6.4 yards per pass, one touchdown and the four interceptions. His QB passer rating was 35.4.
The Bills were also able to stymie Tebow the runner, as he only picked up 34 yards on 10 rushes for the day. A much better team effort from the Bills defense.
The defense kept up some nice pressure today with three sacks on Tebow. Chris Kelsay had two, and Arthur Moats turned in a sack as well.
Leodis McKelvin Making Big Play on Special Teams
2 of 5Leodis McKelvin wasn't thrilled about being benched on defense, so you could see that he was trying to prove he wanted to be more involved when he turned up his play on special teams recently.
Today, McKelvin returned a punt 80 yards in the second quarter to give the Bills a lead that they never relinquished. McKelvin hit a crease and raced up the sidelines for the touchdown.
The Bills overall special teams play from the return game has been basically non-existent most of the year, so the McKelvin score was very refreshing to see.
Kick returner Justin Rodgers has also been showing a spark lately with his kick-off returns, so perhaps, this duo will assume the same role in 2012.
For the day, McKelvin had three punt returns for 135 yards—an average of 45 yards per return. Rogers had 101 yards on three kick returns.
McKelvin was returning the ball like a man possessed today.
Fitzpatrick Takes Better Care of Ball and Manages a Win
3 of 5Ryan Fitzpatrick made better decisions with the football today. He didn't throw away any points with costly interceptions in the red zone.
Fitzpatrick had chances for touchdowns today, but they just failed to click. Fitz hit on 15-of-27 passes for 196 yards—an average of 7.3 yards per attempt, no touchdowns, no interceptions and a QB passer rating of 78.6.
Fitzpatrick was only sacked once in the game as Denver attempted to apply pressure on him. He has some passes glance of David Martin and Tashard Chance's hands.
The outing was far from his best of the year, but from what we had witnessed lately, today was fine.
C.J. Spiller Continues To Impress
4 of 5C.J. Spiller continues to flash one strong game after another. The Bills fans are finally able to see why the Bills were so excited about him when he went in the first round in the 2010 draft.
Today, Spiller ran the ball 16 times for 111 yards, good for an average 6.9 yards per rush. Spiller scored on a four-yard run in the second quarter.
C.J. also made two catches for 27 yards. Spiller used his speed and moves in the open field to make Broncos defenders whiff on tackles.
His late-season surge is probably giving Chan Gailey for some more ideas for the 2012 season.
Steve Johnson Continues To Make Contract Push
5 of 5Steve Johnson came up with another solid performance today, catching four passes for 92 yards. The second-half surge in production should give the Bills the ammunition they need to justify signing him to a larger contract in 2012.
The win today has to be a great elixir for whatever has been ailing the BIlls. They can celebrate the holidays with their families and not walk around carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.
The win brings the Bills to 6-9 on the year. They close out the season next weekend at the New England Patriots. I hope to be better by then, so we will have a greater detailed analysis then.
Happy Holidays Bills fans.
