WWE: Why Alicia Fox Is Not the Answer to the Divas Division's Woes

Sharon GlencrossDec 24, 2011

It is not difficult to see why WWE management pegged Alicia Fox as the next challenger to Beth Phoenix's Divas Championship.

First of all, Phoenix's stale title reign desperately needed new challengers, as the champion has taken on Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres numerous times over the past year on various pay-per-views and episodes of Raw.

The complete silence to the surprise Phoenix-Kelly match at last week's TLC pay-per-view (their fourth outing on pay-per-view) made it blindingly clear that the fans have grown apathetic to the endless cycle Beth-Kelly-Eve-Natalya matches. They are clamouring for a fresh babyface diva to get behind, and while Fox isn't exactly a new name (she's been on the roster since 2008), she's been keeping a relatively low profile for the past couple of years, only recently coming back to the spotlight on Raw, as she assisted Kelly and Eve in their battles against "Pin Up Strong."

Depressingly, it also seems there was no one else to push. Face divas Melina and Gail Kim both parted ways with the company earlier this year. French-Canadian diva Maryse grew bored with wrestling and left, too. Kaitlyn and AJ Lee are on SmackDown and currently embroiled in their own program as Kaitlyn gears up to turn on her tag partner. Tamina has languished in obscurity on the various B shows. Rosa Mendes is absolutely clueless and is far better as a valet. Same goes for the Bella Twins.

Of course, there are plenty of girls in developmental, but it's doubtful that any of them are anything remotely close to ready for the big leagues (most of them are former models, signed out of magazines and beauty contests, and still have to learn the basics of a business they know little about).

So, it is easy to understand why WWE in their desperation for a new challenger turned to Fox; but if management truly think she is the answer to all the problems that plagued WWE's troubled women's division, they are sadly mistaken.

For one thing, she's not exactly bursting with the personality or charisma you would want your division's babyface to have. While new divas like Kaitlyn and AJ Lee have at least made some strides to enhance their characters on SmackDown, presenting themselves as dorky, down-to-earth girls whom fans can relate to, Fox lacks much of a character at all.

Oh, she wants to win matches. And she hates "Pin Up Strong." She also smiles a lot and wears horrible jumpers. But when else does she really have? Even Kelly and Eve (neither of whom are exactly The Rock, either) have more to offer the fans as personalities than she does.

There's also the fact that Alicia's in-ring work is generally quite stiff, clumsy and uncoordinated. While she's superior to someone like Mendes (not saying much), she's still not nearly as capable as she should be, something that can be seen in virtually every match she has on Raw.

Notably, during her non-title match with Phoenix last week's Raw, she botched several moves and delivered a sloppy somersault dropkick for the finish, crashing down on her opponent's face. The Divas Champion needed medical attention backstage and suffered a severely bruised cheekbone because of the move. Certainly, troubling incidents like this don't help Fox's backstage reputation and it is questionable how keen some of the women will be to get in the ring with her after this incident.

Summarily, as the stagnant divas division continues to sink further in the eyes of the fans and those backstage in WWE, it is obvious that the renewed push of Alicia Fox is not a part of the solution. Indeed, with her lack of personality and tendency to botch a lot in the ring, the flawed former model may actually be a big part of the problem.
