Gilbert Arenas: Miami Heat Would Be Best Fit for Former NBA All-Star

Justin WeltonDec 24, 2011

Gilbert Arenas is looking to resurrect his NBA career after having a couple “flops” in the past two seasons. What better place than South Beach?

The Miami Heat would be the best fit for Arenas and what he could provide. Who wouldn’t want to be playing with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh? Arenas would be given the best possible opportunity to succeed with the Heat.

With Wade and James’ ability to penetrate unlike few in the NBA, Arenas would be able to have plenty of opportunities to spot-up in the corners and wait for penetrate-and-kick action.

Wade averaged nearly five assists and James averaged seven last season. They would be able to drive the basketball and find Arenas behind the arc when he is given his 10-15 minutes a night. Arenas is a career 42 percent shooter from the floor and 35 percent shooter from behind the arc.

He would be willing to take a backseat to Wade, James and Bosh in order to win rings. Playing next to all-world athletes sometimes makes players perform at a higher level. Arenas would want to prove that he can still play the game at a high level even if he gets 10-15 minutes a night.

Arenas, believe it or not, is only 29 years old. He’s also a 3-time NBA All-Star. If he could return anything remotely close to his previous form then he could help the Heat win a championship. I’m talking 10-12 points per game on 45 percent shooting.

When he was on top of his game there were few that were superior. Arenas averaged 25.5 points in 2004-05, 29.3 points in 2005-06 and 28.4 in 2006-07. He knows how to score the rock.

Shooting is the last part of an aging player’s game that goes away. In most cases, shooting never goes away.

Miami needs more shooters on the perimeter. Wade and James are slashers not scorers from outside. Shane Battier and Mario Chalmers provide more options, but another scoring guard couldn’t hurt.

The Heat shot 37.3 percent in Game 1, 43.6 in Game 3 and 42.7 in Game 4 of the NBA Finals last season. Miami’s defense is great, but it would take loads of pressure off the defensive side of the floor if they had another shooter on the offensive side.

He is known for wanting to prove people wrong. Arenas wore No. 0 in college for a reason. Why couldn’t he prove people wrong again?

All you hear is how Arenas wouldn’t be a great fit in Miami and Arenas’ game is well past its peak, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Arenas resurrected his NBA career while winning championships in Miami just to prove people wrong once again.
